Transparency and maintenance

Another day, another full day of maintenance with zero explanation to paid customers.

Why does blizzard not post details about WHY there is a major outage occurring with little notice? I don’t care if there are occasional full day outages but not even giving minor details about why that is the case is just absurd.

In any large tech company you usually have some level of blog post/etc about major outages that impact customers. I know blizzard is still 10-15 years in the past on the tech curve but this seems like something extremely easy to do…

Prepare for the stans to come at you saying ‘it’s perfectly normal to have surprise 8hr downtime for a paid service with little to no warning or explanation’

The other thread about today’s maintenance literally 4 posts down wasn’t good enough for you?

I’m specifically asking why Blizz isn’t sharing details for every outage… not this one in particular.

Sorry that you had to spend 2s reading a title on your precious general discussion forums m8

I mean, they do maintenance every tuesday?

They are releasing 10.0 . And there is this thing called COVID. And a war. And fires in Texas. And snow in the North.

Lmao what?!?!?!

Wait are you serious?

10.0 is ~10-12 months away
COVID has nothing to do with an 8 hour maintenance. That was an excuse 2 years ago but not today.
What does a war have to do with a game company thousands of miles away posting a status about why they’re doing 8 hour maintenance with a day’s notice?
Snow and fire hardly impacts the ability to post a status report as to why you’re doing extended maintenance.

All of your reasons are dog, my friend.

Is the word “maintenance” not self explanatory? You need to know more? Really?

Wrong!

As if you/we are owed an explanation?

Maintenance has been every Tuesday for literally 17 years now. It’s far past time people actually get it through their heads that it isn’t a coincidence at this point. Don’t plan your gametime around a Tuesday morning/afternoon even if “most” times it’ll actually be available.

And 100% if Blizzard actually did communicate the issues with us, all it would do it make Karens and male Karens like you jumping out of the woodwork giving your nickle worth of free advice and heaping mounds of criticism on all the things they could have and should have done to prevent this or do it better or yadda yadda.

It is probably some infrastructure change behind the scenes. As far as I know, there is nothing going on in-game content wise.

I can’t imagine a balance patch necessitates 8 hours of downtime.

I don’t know that they necessarily have to “tell us” what they are doing.

I do wish they could work on the amount of downtime their maintenances take. It kind of feels all over the place.

Major patch - 8 hour downtime
Weekly reset - 10 minutes
Xpac Release - no downtime (somehow) - until high pop realms crash
Minor patch - 1 hour - 8 hours

How??

I mean… you catch a pinkie toe on a cabinet… you might not be 100% at work either.

What difference would it make other than to give you something more to complain about. It is maintenance, deal with it.

It’s almost like maintenance isn’t the same every time.

Yah, I would just like to have some sort of transparency around what infra changes are being made to justify this sort of downtime.

I assume they’re replacing server shards but who knows

I wonder if MS will make changes to avoid lengthy down times, or even the weekly downtime altogether.

I really wish Blizzard would talk more about the inner workings of WoW. I bet there is a lot of cool stuff for those who enjoy this kind of tech stuff.
