Transmog history

Why did it took until cataclysm to add transmog to the game and not during wrath of the lich king?

because the tech became available

And, correct me if im wrong, but Im pretty sure that WoW was one of the first MMOs to implement a transmog system so it was a pretty unique at the time

Rift came out in 2011, just after Cata, and had transmog and dying options, too. GW2 released summer of 2012, and had dye and mog. But, I didn’t play at Cata’s start, so if moggin’ was available at start, i think you’re on to something!

Google says it was added in late 2011, so about the same time as the others…but still, it was a new concept that was not common in the genre at the time

Agreed. And I think this is a good instance of where blizzard was continuing to lead game design.

Maybe they didn’t know how they wanted to go about it. Guild Wars (2005) the original had a costume system, but it was designated only for costumes and not armor.

Otherwise, it was one of the best additions they ever added to this game, IMO. It was improved upon by Legion when we got a wardrobe system and no longer had to rely on refarming items per toon for them to sit in the void storage.

DCUO has a transmog system in before WoW.

It came out in 2011, so it was the same year. You’re not wrong…but it still supports the idea that transmog systems were new at that point as an answer to the OP’s question

Transmog is the only thing I wish Classic Wrath had included. So many of my characters look like they belong in a circus.

Why was it 13 years ago and not 15? This feels like such an odd question.

Transmog was a pain for the first few years too, if I recall. You had to actually keep the gear in your bank or storage to use it. Was it Draenor or Legion before we got to the current state where you no longer had to keep the gear?

EQ2 had a visual armor set that you wore and displayed over your gear actual, and I think they had it at launch or soon after.

Yeah, it was Legion that they added the new “wardrobe” system in.

I still have some useless transmog pieces in Void storage that I refuse to let go of for no real reason

Same! Sentimental fool here…

When I came back to WoW from BFA after taking a break in MoP, I had always wondered why I had so much gear in Void Storage. I had thought I was just being sentimental…this makes much more sense.

a lot better then the TBC days

If they got started on the tech it wouldn’t have taken until legion.

Thats kinda like asking why things are always in the last place you look (it’s because you stop looking).
