Transforming The Adventure Guide

The Adventure Guide in its current state is serviceable. It does what it intends to do and functions fine. I’ve got no real issues or qualms with what it currently is, however, there is a lot more that can be done with it.

I think we need a reasonable way to find the story elements of the game. World of Warcraft would benefit massively from this. Having a journal of your travels, a repository of knowledge that is easy to access with the story so far. It would make sense to overhaul the current Adventure Guide to include these aspects in them.

There is a ton of story and lore in this game, and it’s a daunting task to try to piece it all together in a reasonable manner. Needing to rely on outside sources maintained by the fanbase such as databases, wikis, or outside forums just to get anywhere and dealing with the respective people who own or maintain those is an awful experience a lot of the time. It’s unreliable and unruly to deal with. It makes keeping the story together more of a chore than it needs to be.

People do it out of necessity, not because they want to deal with such headaches. Having all of the major story elements laid out and easily accessible would be a fantastic change for getting people invested in the World (s) of Warcraft. This would also mean including some elements from the novels that are important and expanded upon but have no reasonable place to put them into the game.

Most major factions and races should be included in this. Also, there should be character dossiers to help you keep track of all the major characters you meet who play importance to the story and shaping of the world.

There is already an in-game model viewer with the dungeon guide and it’d be great to expand upon it for both allies and enemies alike. Having the ability to see their in-game model as an option alongside reading about them.

A proposal I have is to see that guide able to be expanded upon the baseline just by the player playing the game. Alongside it offers players something to seek out and be rewarded for experiencing the game. The more you do quests with certain factions or dig up certain artifacts, the more story elements you are able to piece together.

The systems that could be included are: completing quests, doing dungeons and raids, reading books and other readable items, exploring the zones, some professions, and the reputation system.

All of this can be part of filling out your guide. There would be different tasks you can tackle to complete certain things and general overall progress to where you don’t actually need to focus on doing everything to learn it all. It would provide players an opportunity to do what they enjoy the most.

There would be account-wide awards tied to it such as mounts, pets, cosmetic armor and weapons, titles, toys, or heirloom items.

I know there are some existing weapon and armor models that currently have no place in the game aside from NPCs or that are simply existing models in the data files that could be awarded to a player. All of these could be tied into the system alongside creating recolors of other items and crafting some new weapons and armor sets.

If you completed a lot of the story for the gnomes/mecha-gnomes perhaps you get to customize your very own Mechanical Mount. You get a modification system to add different colors, put on decorations, and pick which aspects to modify and change to build it your way.

You could get a toy from the Tauren that allows you to transform yourself into a docile critter and roam Azeroth from the critters’ point of view.

This can be applied to every major culture and faction in Azeroth. It gives you something to hunt and work towards while also providing the benefit of getting you more invested in the story and world of the game. There are just a ton of possibilities with a system like this.

Ultimately I’d like to see the Adventure Guide be transformed to include a ton of lore resources and perhaps provide some rewards along the way.

I’ve been having the same line of thought about this for a while, and I think this is something we really need! Thank you for writing about this :>. I particularly like the idea of getting to complete your guide by adding to it over time, as a sort of collectable in-game lorebook!

I think I’d separate it from the adventure journal, though. The adventure journal does have some lore in it, but it is primarily used to look up relevant gameplay such as tactics, loot tables, collections such as tier sets and legendaries, and weekly quests. It might be a little confusing to have both of these in the same place.

In my draft on archaeology (which is mostly about other stuff) I called this sort of concept the Exploration Guide instead, and I take it a few steps further:

It’s important to have a solid baseline for the game, and that should be unlocked without having to play the game - and then you gradually add to it as you explore and play the game. It’s important players at least get to have an idea of the cultures of the different races, classes and the two factions, plus a quick history of everything that happened pre-World of Warcraft (and also summaries of what happened in each expansion).

But I also think we can expand our scope of what we really want to know, do we just want the general lore and story beats written down, or could we fill it in with more information along the way? Take the Sylvanas plot: many players have been really confused about what the heck is going on with her, but if we had gotten extra information added to our journals that actually explained most of these things for us in hard words, much confusion could be alleviated.

I also want information on things that are beyond characters, story and lore. How about a bestiary section that gives you a gallery of creatures to look through, with some fun information attached to it, just like the mount and pet descriptions? It could even be more detailled and let you spend some time to actually work on trying to understand these creatures. A perfect sort of collectible minigame for hunters, or anyone else interested in learning more about the creatures that roam Azeroth.

Let’s also include some more arcane concepts such as cosmology, magic, faith and religion, even philosophy if applicable. It can be so much more than just history, lore and character profiles.

I realise it’d take a lot of work to add to this, especially if it was to be done retroactively, but it’s probably something that ought to be done. I’m not saying we need 3000 words on the personality of some random NPC, everything needs to be done in a reasonable fashion. I don’t mind if we start with the big important stuff, and then add in smaller entries as we go.

The point is, players really need to know about these things, it enriches the setting so much and makes us a lot more invested in it. There are already tons of good resources for all of these things out there, but not everyone knows where to find them.

I think it makes sense to primarily expand your journal by doing quests, but also enriching it by completing dungeons, killing rares, looting treasures, reading books, and very importantly in my opinion: doing archaeology - it’s literally designed around uncovering the history of Azeroth, after all!

I don’t think all of the stuff we need added to the journal would really need to be very game-ified, either. It doesn’t necessarily need to give any rewards, I would actually be a little upset if it created a gameplay loop where you’re rushing to try to complete your journal just because you want a mount it rewards. I also really don’t want any entries in the journal to be gated behind difficult content, such as killing a mythic raid boss or farming a rare item such as the love rocket. The journal should be held sacred in that regard, and be very accessible for players who are curious about it, while also encouraging them to go out and explore and play the game just a little bit.

Those are just some of the things I’ve come up with so far, anyway.
