tl;dr Training Grounds needs to address Gearing, or gearing needs to go, and leveling is so close to my idea.

So I am watching the Systems Download (linked above), and I just finished the PvP bit. I was skipping every 5 seconds during it, as I am uninterested in PvP until I heard “hard to approach” from Ion himself.
I stopped, and I listened. Training Grounds is exactly what this game needs to bring players like me into the PvP fold. He is 100% correct. There is so much to learn about PvP, but that is only one of the issues.
Training Grounds will help immensely, dont get me wrong. The ability to play the actual game modes, against actual smart bots, will help drive players into PvP. For example, Marvel Rivals was the last PvP game I played. The ability to learn each hero in a controlled setting is far superior than just diving head first, or using the static training dolls.
However, there is still one thing that needs to be addressed in terms of PvP onboarding, and I hope this new Training Ground feature will help with it:
Gearing
The whole point of PvP is the ability to test your skills. Ion admits this is a problem, that people quote
Check out pvp, and feel like 'Ok I just got destroyed, I dunno if this is for me.
You can have a mode that lets you learn your class, and learn how the BGs work, but if you do not have the gear? You are dead.
Many other games of different genres have a mode where you can initially kind of learn the maps, learn the rules, learn combat against bots. And that’s an easy on-ramp to kind of build your confidence to make sure that you know what you’re doing before you match up against other players.
This is 100% true, but he also needs to remember that those other games have no gearing. I can go jump into Halo Infinite right now, do a few bot matches to get warmed up and refresh my memory of the map and power spawns, vehicle locations, and vantage points of each map, and then go snipe someone out of a ghost.
Thats my thoughts. Yes, I know PvPers say “its easy to gear”…but not for players like me.
