Not sure where to put this, but I just paused in the middle of my first excursion into Torghast and wanted to just say thank you for such and awesome idea. I absolutely love that it is a different dungeon experience, like reminiscent of some old pen and paper RPGs. I hope to see more of this type of mechanics and game play in the future. Not sure if you can take a party inside later on, but I hope so. Ok, enough of that, back to the dungeon.
Torghast is great until you spend an hour soloing a Layer 3 Mort’regar, finish it for the first time and find the boss doesn’t drop any Soul Ash for you. And that Blizzard offers no support help for this.
I have been pleasantly surprised by Torghast for the most part, and I think it has tremendous potential. However, I do have a few things that I feel are currently holding it back significantly.
-
Way too many awful anima powers. I feel like there are so many powers I see that are just like “yeah I’ll never want this” and another significant number that just don’t matter very much. I understand the need for variance but I think the balance is skewed way too far toward the unexciting. Which also directly relates to variance in fun. When I go in and get a bunch of sweet powers it’s way more fun than when I keep getting garbage ones (obviously).

Chain casting mobs - this appears to be the same no matter what group size you are, and you can’t use disorients to stop them very well either as they immediately resume casting as soon as it wears off or your break it. Some of these casts are quite deadly and I often feel like I have no tool to stop them.
-
Boss tuning - I imagine this was difficult to collect good data on, but I often feel like the final boss fight is determined far more by if I got good anima powers in my run (which aren’t exactly fast at higher levels) than by any of my skill as a player. This could also be addressed by my first point in anima power disparity.
Otherwise I find it a pretty cool game mode and enjoy the scalability of it at different group sizes (3 and 5 man tuning have felt the most difficult to me).
I think the art in Torghast is top notch and the anima powers make for a very unique experience. I’ve had fun learning anima power combos for sure. Torghast is really cool,
BUT
I know I am going to get supremely bored with it very quickly. It’s just week two and I am already struggling to drag alts through all the layers because it is just a required chore, much like farming visions. I loved visions for about a month, then they just became a monotonous chore.
Really love Torghast
