Here’s my three biggest gripes with Battle for Azeroth:
- Lack of Open World Content
Dear lord. There is a depressing lack of open world content in this expansion. All we do is the same world quests over and over, and we earn the same old reputation for six factions. The only reason we’re doing it anymore is for the toys from the Paragon boxes. There’s no unique reputations, helpful gear or any recipes that are worth using. The only reason you get Exalted with Order of Embers is for the mount.
Blizzard needs to realize that no matter how much content they stuff into Island Expeditions and Warfronts, these systems will be flawed. After you win a Warfront, you get some free Heroic gear and some Azerite. There’s no more engaging content to be done after that. Same with Island Expeditions, too! All you do is get 36,000 Azerite for the Treasure Map, and then you’re done. There’s no long-term value to doing either Warfronts or Island Expeditions based on the time you put in.
World quests are also a detriment, in my opinion. They shouldn’t be removed, but they should have differences based on the zone you’re in, and they also need to have a greater challenge for a greater reward. Remember Oondatsa? It’d be amazing to see a world boss like him who could provide an awesome reward for downing him.
Bringing back dailies or some sort of currency that you could invest into mounts with cool zone-wide abilities and meaningful gear like they did during Trial of the Crusader would be an amazing first step.
- Raiding, Progression and Stuff of the Sorts
There’s so much they could do to fix raiding and dungeons. Also, don’t click off, but I truly think LFR needs to go. I think it’s more of a detriment to the community than anything else. For me, it’s less so about the lack of challenge it provides and more so about the fact that it facilitates this system where players don’t need guilds or groups to get stuff done. It makes things seem singleplayer-oriented and it makes important lore characters who are powerful raid bosses feel like a joke. They should be tough bosses that reward you with cool loot for defeating the challenge they’ve brought to the table.
On top of that, there’s too many difficulties. Removing Heroic mode from both dungeons and raids could significantly decrease the item level gap between raids, making different raids more meaningful and could still be considered current content for gear catch-up and challenges. If both LFR and Heroic went, we’d have a tier that’s only 15 item levels big. There could even be Normal/Mythic hard modes that give you a +5 item level upgrade to all gear.
Titanforging and Warforging is also a huge yikes. Bellular recommended an awesome system recently where the highest an item could titanforge is 10 item levels, but you could also upgrade the same piece of gear that didn’t receive that extra boost for up to 10 item levels with a titanforging currency. That way, you could always end up getting up to 10 item levels higher with your gear if it was worth it, and you wouldn’t get items better than Heroic gear in Normal, which is a good thing.
We also need raid currencies in general to come back. Killing a boss could give you 1 piece of that currency, and you’d save up to buy gear that doesn’t drop for you. It’d be much more balanced and would feel like you’ve invested much more time into the game that way. It feels more rewarding, and the more content you do, the more of that currency you’d get per boss.
Mythic+ also feels a bit empty. It’s an awesome system, but they should have a Mythic+ Timed Mode where adds matter, and a Mythic+ Challenge Mode where bosses matter so it can feel like a 5-player mini-raid. There should also be more achivements, mounts and a currency that allows you to get any Mythic+ gear. Maybe they could have Justice Points for dungeons again, and then introduce a new currency called Elite Justice Points for Mythic+? The higher the key level, the more you’d get from the dungeon. (Also, make group loot/master loot a thing again. Nobody liked forced personal loot).
- No Sense of Community Anymore
This is a huge one. I won’t reiterate my statement on LFR, but that’s one major thing. Other than that, guilds. A lot of people know me here on the forums for my guild activism threads because if there’s anything we need to salvage in WoW, it’s the community.
Guilds are empty husks thanks to this expansion. Blizzard needs to add more achievements, more guild challenges, more mounts, pets and toys as rewards. Maybe have a garrison-like guild hall that’s multiplayer where you can go on player missions with your guild. That’d open a whole new window for achievements. Have Island Expedition/Warfront achievements. Put in Allied race achievements. Hell, even bring back guild levels. Those were great. Overall, add more things to guilds that brings communities together.
Host more community events, whether it be giant open-world invasions in the old-world like they did with the Legion pre-patch or an in-game raid challenge where the first NA guild to complete Mythic during that week gets an awesome prize.
Also, guild leaders had tons of power stripped from them. Communities strip away the unique variation in guilds by creating an alternative where all like-minded people can create an unneeded echo chamber. They need to remove communities, give guild masters back all permissions (almost all mod permissions were stripped from us), and also give us WAY more calendar perms so events can be advertised more.
