This is a toughy…
I’m gonna have to say Baine, 100%, dude is a terrible character. Then possibly Jaina for swapping her personality out so rapidly and forcing herself into narrative positions she had no need to be in, and finally probably Sylvanas for being the one character i can’t get angry at because i stopped viewing her as a character and now only see her as a plot device to move the story in whatever direction blizzard wants it to go.
Admiral Holdo
General Hux
Captain Phasma
not Rose Tico, surprisingly, despite how utterly cringy her TLJ dialogue was.
What? You never specified WoW character.
Oh, okay…
I don’t know that I hate any specific character themselves…
…but I do hate how they’re written at times.
I hate how Anduin is written so that he always turns out to be right about everything. It’s not that he never doubts himself; he does- and then the narrative itself twists around his guesses to prove that he was right all along about whatever.
I don’t hate Sylvanas, but I hate how they try to make her look smarter than everyone else by making everyone else DUMB and keeping her ‘True Plans™’ vague and then having the results of ANY action turn out to be ‘All A Part Of Her True Plans™’.
I don’t hate Jaina, but I hate how schizo she’s written. “Peace with the Horde at all costs! I mean, peace with the Horde is impossible, death to the Horde! No, peace with them is more important, er, no DEATH AGAIN! Forever this time, I mean it- um, PEACE, PEACE, PEACE!”
I’m actually going to exclude BfA from this, because it’d be the standard “Sylvanas, Saurfang, Anduin” due to how they were portrayed in this expansion. I didn’t know anything about Saurfang before this, and I liked Sylvanas and Anduin prior to it.
Illidan. His “redemption” was shoehorned, at best. It was done in that awful way Blizzard does where no one is right, but him. It also failed to acknowledge or account for the multitude of terrible things he did, particularly on Outland. Much like Snape, there are also some pretty uncomfortable moments where the narrative glorifies him for what is actually a pretty unhealthy obsession with a clearly uninterested woman. Plus every one of his lines gives mental laceraitions from the pure edge.
Anduin. Mostly for his… unenthusiastic response to Tyrande request for aid. While prioritizing a long dead Human kingdom. They’re also doing that annoying thing they did with Illidan, where they’re trying to frame Anduin as the only one that’s right. Despite him being wrong, and Tyrande and even Genn being the ones in the right.
The Horde. Pick a character, any character. They were all too happy to kill their way across two Night Elven zones, and can only be brought to question it when they go “Gee… maybe the Alliance won’t like that we did a genocide again” (i.e., when their actions might have some kind of negative consequence for themselves), or after Mommie Dearest tells them she doesn’t love them anymore. Special shoutout to Thalyssra though, for making me waste so much time saving her gaudy city for her ungrateful carcass.
in no specific order
Preach, brother man. Preach.
I don’t care enough to “hate” anymore… Dislike or just don’t find interestin’?
Anduin, Jaina, and Baine.
Illidan, for everything Galenorn said. He summed it up perfectly for me. It felt like the game just ignored the stuff he did just to bring him back as some nauseating supercool superhero. I also hate the demon hunter class concept in general; I feel like the last thing the game needed was another agile leather-wearing melee class. Making it elf-only was worse, and even for fantasy weapons, warglaives just strike me as way too stupid to like. I’d have rather the class get junked altogether.
Honestly I think he’s so bad that everyone else I dislike just feels like distant runners-up in comparison. I guess the next two I’d pick are Baine and Genn, both because they come off as one-note gimmicks. Baine’s more irritating to me because his entire existence seems to be “the good one” and he’s intended to be a character I would like, while Genn’s only purpose is to be prepacked pathos for faction war crap.
Edit: lol I forgot all about Calia. What an idiotic character. Nevermind Baine/Genn, she and Illidan can share all three spots together.
“Hate” is a strong word, but for me two characters irritate me far more than any others:
Baine
Calia
Turalyon- comes off as very pompous.
Nathanos-obnoxious jerk to the player, especially before seething shore bg.
Anduin- pales in comparison to his predecessor.
Baine- If Blizzard needs to resort to hamfisted exposition such as “Baine Bloodhoof represents all that is good in the Horde” to try and make us like him, then you know he sucks.
Jaina: ugh…
Alleria: Delusional hypocrite.
Honorable mention to Anduin for being BORING.
I don’t know about hate… I don’t really think about many Warcraft characters unless I am playing the game or discussing the lore. But if I had to mention 3 Characters I really dislike…
Genn Greymane:
He is a Character that I loathe working with. He provoked the entire events in BfA with his Warmongering, and he gets a pass from the Narrative team. The most he got is a “stern rebuke” from Anduin and the fact that Saurfang and Sylvanas agree his actions are solid ground for war. OK, the major players in the narrative agree his actions were wrong. But he does not pay a price for it. He gets away with his crimes and warmongering, and I have to work with him. It is really disgusting.
He should have been imprisoned, or forced to apologize to Anduin and the Horde, or paid restitution to the Horde. It makes it hard for me to feel any empathy for the Alliance when they never face any consequences for their wrong doing. Every action the Horde does feels like justice. Even burning Teldrassil makes sense enough, because Teldrassil gave safe harbor to Genn and his Worgen, who attempted to assassinate the Warchief.
Genn is pretty much the only Character I really dislike. The one I can’t stand working with. I do not mind any others on that level. But to play the game right, I will think of two more…
Saurfang:
A distant second. I liked him before BfA, but in BfA, he seemed like a lecturing hypocrite with dementia. The fact that he had to be taught how to have a spine from Anduin was horrid. Fortunately, he is out of the picture. Removed in a satisfying puff of purple smoke. So that’s good.
Calia Menethil:
I guess she would be third. She arrives on the scene and is given everything. She is now some uber lightforged undead queen waiting in the wings, who can soothe the souls of all Undead. She is just mildly irritating, but probably because she has had minimal screen time. I think I will grow to dislike her the more they focus on her.
Again, Genn is the only one that really irritates me to actually work with. Saurfang is satisfyingly removed from the picture, and Calia has just begun her path of cluttering the narrative.
EDIT: I forgot about Garrosh. If I thought about him, he would be number 2, bumping Saurfang down to 3, and kicking Calia out of the top 3. But he is dead and gone and out of the picture for a few expacs, so I don’t even think about him.
Hmm, hard one. I really try to put myself into a character’s shoes before deciding to hate them forever. Based on that:
Anduin- absolute lack of empathy (not sympathy) and a rather delusional character. He enforces and is stubborn about his own ideas of what everyone should be and the game gives him the power to do so.
Illidan- probably the most absurd character in the game. I actually liked him in wc3 where he seemed an anti-hero (and faced consequences), but then redeeming him into this anti-Legion weapon made me scream “WHAT? AFTER ALL HE’S DONE”
Nathanos- As I said, I try to put myself in someone’s shoes and Nathanos’ just make my feet hurt. Again a character I admired till Cata and beyond, but since Legion it’s grating to hear him and his model makes it worse. I just cannot see where this character is coming from anymore, even Sylvanas is way more relatable than this “It iS aN hOnOr tO sErVe mY QuEeN” garbage.
Bonus: Calia, another garbage character who came from nowhere to shove herself into everyone’s story
Anduin/Baine (They’re basically the same character)
Genn
Jaina
They handled that in quite possibly the most inelegant way–
Seriously. Remember when I picked your junkie, damn near dead butt off the street? Nursed you back to health? Helped you regain the trust of your people and overthrow that regime? Created that tree?
And then you throw me to the wolves? You ungrateful mutha–
I suppose that’s not her fault, technically. The writers just…sigh. Anar’alah, that was a stupid decision. You don’t tie an expansion long quest chain to order halls and progress, and then after that, decide that those people go to one faction.
Anduin - Less for his actual character, more for how the narrative just won’t let him be wrong. The narrative warps around him in strange ways. He makes the Alliance too peaceful, he can be High King of the Alliance when apparently Warchief Bad, and because of magic bones he can’t even be wrong about something without feeling pain, so he must always be doing something right. And the final nail in the coffin was this blue eyed, blond haired, pasty little kid lecturing the legendary Varok Saurfang on… Honor. A term which permeates Orcish culture far more than humans. That disgusted me beyond anything else. To think I almost put him second until I started writing what I hate about him and realized “Huh I actually do hate his guts.”
Gallywix - almost every other Horde leader pre-BfA has/had good qualities, except for this little… thing. He’s entertaining, for sure, but as leader he’s a stain on the faction and the race he supposedly represents. Why Blizzard thought Thrall would appoint him I’ll never know.
Baine - a very distant third because there are few WoW characters I hate, and this guy’s only here because Blizzard won’t let him do anything meaningful in the Horde that isn’t capitulating to the Alliance. He has potential, but it’s never been realized because they just emphasize him being a peacenik too hard. Those cut voice lines of him defending the gates of Mulgore are god-like, we need more of that Baine.
I don’t hate but the top 3 characters I can’t stand are Calia, Sylvanas, and Garrosh.
Sylvanas Sylvanas and Sylvanas
