Top 3 DPS Specs with the highest skill ceiling in PVE Raids and M+?

Not sure if I worded the title right, but I am curious what you guys think the top 3 specs in the game are that have the largest skill gap between a really good player and a top tier player? Not necessarily the HARDEST spec to play well, but the one that the top 1-2% do significantly more damage than the 5% or so under them.

Hope that makes sense… and there is a reason I am asking so thank you for your input.

Sub rogues are probably up there.

Haven’t played my rogue in a long while though, so take that with a grain of salt.

It’s subjective. What some people find difficult, others will find easy.

Personally I really enjoy frost mage because it has a low floor but a high ceiling. Easy to get into but then there is a lot you can do to really optimize it.

That’s how all specs should be, I feel.

Frost DKs are pretty easy but also has some potential for maximization via extending your breath for a long time, which creates a notable gap.

Then, we have demo lock. There is a massive difference between a good and a bad one. I think it may be my pick for this question.

The answer to your question for the top specs for all content you mentioned is by FAR feral druid.

We can safely rule hdh out

monks and enhancement have a lot of buttons to smash… I think you want the APM scores? Actions per minute… “Hardest” is indeed too broad of a statement.

Like, if you truly think about it, every specs is easy to learn. It’s just hard to master any of them.

So VDH requires skill then? That’s good to hear.

I’ll never understand this. The momentum build for Havoc requires game knowledge and can be difficult for people to play

Meh. I feel like all tanks are around the same skill level rotation wise

I would disagree. I play all of the tanks at a high level in keys and there is a marked difference between optimizing them.

They’re all fairly different and fit different playstyles.

My least favorite is guardian because the spec puts me to sleep but that is a personal thing.

That’s fair. Pretty much all of my characters are tanks and they’ve all just kinda blended together. Aside from Prot Warrior, I could never get into that one, it feels really weird to me.

Prot warrior is my favorite for precisely that reason. It has a lot going on to really optimize it.

DK and monks are a ton of fun too.

If you’re counting healers, disc priest is probably up there.

Ask 80% of players, and you’ll likely come across:

Hardest spec: Whatever I play
Easiest spec: Whatever spec is beating me on the logs in raid

Fixed that for you

Yeah, they only press two buttons.

Top 3 off of my head are Feral, Survival and Demo

SP, Warlock, Sub rogue these are by far the hardest requiring a lot of skill, practice and game knowledge.

A close runner up is probably Arcane mage, requires really good timings and cd use.

I’m not sure AMP is the right metric for difficulty, since by that statement, I think the most difficult class in WoW history would be Arcane Mages, in the iterations where they just spammed Arcane Blast for 90% of the fight.

Currently what makes Feral a bit of an awkward spec for people, is just spamming your buttons on your keyboard will significantly lower your DPS, because of how Blood Talons and Ferocious Bite works. Right now Feral is probably in the top 5 of high skill ceilings to play.

Another one I’ve played around with, is Windwalker Single target, it’s not as punishing if you do it poorly vs Feral, but it is tricky to get perfect.
