This is just a fun topic because it did not occur to me until recently. Obviously right now the bench mark of who is the best in the world comes down to how fast a guild speed runs a raid. And as people may have seen with high end guilds, they do some really unique strategies like using flask of petrification to pull the whole room before Faerlina. In the speed running community, they have tools that can be run for given games to observe the tricks that computers would be able to perform for the best possible times. So that made me wonder if it were possible to set up CPUs given a massive amount of simulations, what would the best (though likely not realistically obtainable) time in Naxxramas would be and as to how they would do that.
speed clearing a 15 year old game doesnt make you the best in the world btw. Most of these guilds are playing private servers for 20+ hours to do these runs on live. its not impressive
But the people with some of the top times are the best in the world. At Classic. Speedrunning is one of the two highest metrics to measure what guild is better. The other being Warsong Gulch. Again. In Classic. You might be conflating skill of retail vs classic. Which I do agree that Retail takes way more skill it isn’t even close.
The unfortunate reality is speedrunning could be a lot better. But the person that runs Warcraft Logs dictates some easier metas. For example, there’s been private server Blackwing Lair speedruns where you only kill 1 techie pack.
That is true. A lot of trash could be ignored with given raids which would be more optimal in what legitimate speedrunners in the speedrunning community would see as meeting the goal of simply clearing the raid. They probably would split it into skip and no skip categories as well. Because with skip, that also adds invis pots into the mix of speedrunning.
Warcraft Logs basically only set standards for speed in given raids so that it would be on a level playing field to all… well that doesn’t seem to be the case now with how top runners abuse flask mechanics to get better times. But in the end, speedrunning is suppose to be just meeting a specific goal with no limitations being place.
