I’ve been trying out both Ancient Teachings and Tear. The different benefits these 2 provide are quite huge in what they provide, in my opinion.
DPS - With Ancient Teachings, I’m averaging 2.2 - 2.5k dps by the end of the dungeon (sometimes higher with certain dungeons like Necrotic Wake orbs + kyrian bonus etc…). Feels pretty nice to be able to keep people topped up without having to stop dps’ing.
-With Tear, my dps is significantly lower, averaging around 1.2k-1.5k by the end of the dungeons. Having to stop dps’ing to heal and keep people topped up really hurts consistent damage output.
Healing/HPS - Ancient Teachings has some pretty nice heals / hps. What I don’t like is it will not always heal the ideal target in certain situations. Also ranged players that are injured will sometimes outrange the effect and wont be healed. The healing doesnt feel as potent as Tear. If the group is taking consistent heavy damage, stepping back to heal feels not as potent as with Tear.
- Tear significantly boosts my overall healing / hps, by a lot. I’m ending the dungeon with over 70% overall healing and peaking 11-12k+ hps in certain moments of fights. I find this a much safer pick for pure healing and keeping everyone alive.
I’m weighing the pros and cons of each but I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it. I always find it good to get outside opinions to compare my own thoughts.
My take is Ancient Teachings feels nice in a pure premade where everyone is in disc coordinated and mega heavy healing doesn’t feel as important. Tear feels like a much safer pick in a pug environment where people may be taking heavier damage more consistently or unpredictably and require bigger more consistent heals to keep everyone up.
What do you all think is best / or what do you prefer?
The weird thing about AtotM in regards to overall dps is that it doesn’t actually increase our damage dealt at all aside from allowing more uptime, but it puts me in a mindset of “I am now effectively contributing to DPS” so I tighten up and play more aggressively to max out total output on both meters.
Normally though, just being in melee every 10 seconds for a RSK is too restricting for me in the level of keys I do (that being 15-17 just to max gear rewards each week) since failed mechanics are punishing, but not always instant death. This means that if I’m quick (and my gcd is free), I can save deaths just by spot healing like a boss. If I regularly pushed high keys with players who didn’t make these mistakes, I would certainly be AtotM since if someone fails, they arent getting saved, and the dps contribution cant be ignored.
In 9.0 I left my Fatal Touch on by accident as we started a key and decided it was worth a shot. Now THAT’S a DPS increase! I highly recommend testing it out for yourself and ripping 30-35 touches in a single dungeon
. a 40-50k nuke on a 1 minute cooldown can do wonders for problem adds if you don’t have grips (like frostbolt volley mobs on necrotic wake 2nd boss). Best Touch of Death targets are isolated targets that aren’t getting cleaved with the rest of the pack, you can save your group 3-5 seconds of focus by handling it yourself.

I make the choice between Tear and ATotM depending on the affixes of the week. ATotM is ideal but when melee gets slapped hard I go with Tear.

ToM is probably better for HPS but I really don’t feel like I’m struggling to keep people alive so I’ve been playing Ancient Teachings w/ Ichor. Probably won’t change anytime soon unless I go into 20+
I pug heal a lot as well. There are times when you’ve got a DPS that is a damage magnet and your tank is also struggling to stay topped but between crane or just casting with EF HoT I still don’t feel like I’m at any significant loss.

ATOTM with Sanguine Ichor and Chalice powers removes the challenges from most affix combos below an 18. Sanguine Ichor procs a massive amount while you’re going through your fistweaving rotation, and as long as you have EF up on the party, triage will never impact your mana with Chalice.
The only one I will go ToM for, is Necotic/Fortified. Historically speaking, I’ve found that I have an easier time on Tyrannical and a harder time with Fortified, which is the opposite of literally everyone I know.

I’m the same way. I prefer tyrannical weeks over fortified. Fort weeks feel tougher for me and harder on my mana.
Yeah with fistweave ichor feels very good. Although I never run chalice when I fistweave as it feels really easy on the mana.
ToM on the other hand I feel my mana draining much faster.
I think it comes down to bosses being more predictable than trash, particularly for PuGs. I think a lot of the aversion to Tyrannical comes from wipes being more punishing on bosses than on trash.

For mistweaver in particular, it’s really hard to keep multiple targets alive who are taking massive amounts of damage. This happens on trash, but not very common on bosses.

I have tried both and do like atotm when I was kyrian. Lately I switched to venthyr and gave sinister teachings a whirl in dungeons. It’s actually very nice. If anyone is venthyr I’d give it a shot. The cdr is kinda wild. I’ve gotten it down to 30 seconds and the ichor seems to proc a lot with it though I’m not 100% sure it procs off fallen order monks

In the few days since my post I’ve seen some great success from venthyr mistweavers using the new covenant legendary. Definitely worth checking out

Vampire MW is suuuuuper fun. I’m also enjoying it as WW tbh. It is super mana friendly.

I think the proc rate is bugged on Tear of Morning with spreading Renewing Mist. I haven’t had too much luck with it so I went with ATOTM. Essence Font - > Thunder Focus Tea - > Rising Sun Kick 13k heal → Tiger Palm 1k heal → Rising sun Kick 13k heal → tiger palm 1k heal → tiger palm 1k heal → 3 x blackout kick 9k heal
Thats a lot of healing done by ATOTM. I outperform most monks with tear of morning playing ATOTM also.
