I heard it was to pay off the mermaid mafia, and I have about as much proof of that as you do that its because of classic.

I plan to buy 20 tokens in about 3 weeks.
Expecting to get at least 170k per token.
though i will be grinding from zero in classic, always happy to keep some gold handy in retail n deck out 1 toon.
Classic is on the exact same subscription as retail WoW, so it’s not like people who play retail will have to start paying more to play Classic. They’re getting Classic as a free bonus already.
