To the Void Elves

I’ve been wanting to get back into RP, but the lack of Velf lore makes it hard to create a backstory. So, my fellow void followers, at what time was your character banished from Silvermoon and how long was it until you traveled to the Telogrus Rift?

There isn’t really anything specific on exactly when Umbric and his followers were exiled however there is an apparent gap between that and Telogrus. It’s been speculated to have perhaps happened at any time since the Sunwell’s restoration, mainly due to concerns for the well’s integrity.

It’s also likely that that their time in Telogrus before Alleria’s arrival was brief, unless they somehow managed to simply stumble about a place so close to the Void for a long time. The is also an apparent gap between the exile and them entering Telogrus, which can be inferred by Umbric’s notes being found throughout the Ghostlands.

Frankly I don’t quite think it’s worth puzzling out the details for this particular point in time regardless; and anything before and after should be rather easy.

As Photine said above, we don’t have specifics for when Umbric’s lot were exiled. My feeling is that it was FAIRLY recent - at least it seemed that way with how it sprung to Rommath’s mind so readily, but there’s no evidence to say either way.

Personally, my void elf started following Umbric a bit after the Broken Shore Campaign of 7.2. His motivation was that he was concerned at the rising influence of the Blood Knights, and wanted to use the void to try to bring the Farstriders back into a state of relevancy - once again becoming the mainstay of the Thalassian army. Obviously his plan backfired when he was exiled, and here we are :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve kept it murky and mainly built around the lore events that were most relevant to the character.

One is a former Sunfury Warp-Engineer who had a weird encounter with a void entity and gradually slipped into freelance adventuring/experimentation. She probably linked up with Umbric early on, because their causes aligned well and she was already used to following a bold and dangerous magician.

The other had to be a much later recruit because he started monk training in MoP. He got too curious about the wrong things sometime during Legion, and Umbric’s crew was willing to answer his questions. He wanted to understand the Void to help keep balance among the world’s magics and, uh, wish granted?

My void elf was never officially banished. She always saw Umbric as a crackpot, but she followed her twin sister to Telgorus to protect her. My void elf considers Umbric to be a cult leader and for this reason she is building a law suit against him.

I always figured they were exiled some time ago, not too long after the fall of Silvermoon. IIRC I remember something about their banishment being due to studying and looking into void magic Dar’khan himself used, and that betrayal was still fresh in their minds at the time and Lor’themar wasn’t having more of that nonsense. I could be wrong though.

With the way the Void Elf starting area is I always assumed that not every Void Elf was part of Umbric’s group. You see Sin’dorei Scholars and High Elf Wayfarers in Telogrus Rift, we can assume they are there to study and learn how to use the Void as well, so your Void Elf character doesn’t necessarily have to have been exiled to become one. You could always say they heard of the Ren’dorei and that Alleria was training them, so they wanted to learn how to do that themselves.

Given that Alleria just visiting the Sunwell accidentally almost caused a major crisis… probably very safe to assume that if you’re a void elf, you’re banished.

Outside of that… Velves are still people to my understanding so should function the exact same way when making a backstory. Even if they are now future old god servants and abominations with no right to exist.
