Every expansion i end up quitting riiiight before it comes out, and then getting the drive to play again about midway through. This expac was no different.
I’m a little more strapped for cash both in game, and irl, than i normally am this time around though. So i’d like to make enough money to pay for my sub with gold. I’ve never been particularly good ad doing this though.
I was hoping you guys could help me catch up to the current player base, as far as picking my professions, getting the most out of them, and then making the most gold from it.
I’m willing to pick any professions, and do anything that i can do solo.
Thank you for your time.
Question: do you have any professions currently?
Most professions have been bot farmed, and raw mats are relatively cheap, skinning leather is 1g per leather, cloth has abysmal drop rates, farming the naga ritual site lands you 32 bright linen, 7 sunfire silk and 1 arcanoweave. Per run on a rank 3 difficulty with reenforcments turned on . Selling 500 sunfire silk will land you 40k, it takes roughly 10-15 minutes at a 316 ilvl to clear the dungeon something like 71 runs of farming to accomplish roughly 12-18 hours of farming if you play 2 hours a day it would take you a week to make 40-50k if you went with tailoring
Ok there are four main ways to make gold with professions. You need to pick the one that best suits your play style.
- Gathering. You can pick flowers and mine ores at your leisure. You can do this for hours at a time or just minutes. If you want to grind for hours you’ll have a slightly different focus than if you want to gather for a few minutes.
- Patron orders. Professions now have a currency called moxie that can be used to buy materials. Also there are random bags that also have materials. Both of these are found in patron orders. You can log in daily and do orders which are cheap to gain these materials. Professions best for patron order farming: tailoring, enchanting, engineering.
- Personal order gear crafting. This involves sitting in trade waiting for orders. While it may take time to get someone to order from you, it is pure profit; all the materials are given and you obtain a commission on top of that. Downside is that you may be waiting for awhile. Another downside is that when you start, you can only make a few items. Best professions for this: leatherworking, blacksmithing (also to a lesser extent inscription, jewelcrafting, and tailoring)
- Crafting consumables. This requires careful planning and high stats. You need to monitor the AH to keep an eye of material costs. This can be done no matter how much gear or skill you have but more of these yield bigger profits. Best professions for this: alchemy (hands down), enchanting
Which of these matches what your play style best?

Given the choices presented, i’ll likely be focusing on Gathering. I’ve not delved back deeply into the game, but in my previous experience i usually just spend most of my time waiting on bg or rated bg queues and either testing my builds or just not doing much. I’ll likely fill this time with just flying around gathering resources.
That sounds like a great idea.
If you’re doing bursts of intermittent gathering, consider using (for herbalism only):
*Imbued mulch (see the mulching wheel): when used on any herb it guarantees a nocturnal lotus will drop. These still sell for 260 g or so. This ability has an hour long cooldown but that’s perfect for doing a little herbing while waiting for queues.
*Magical mulch + green thumb combo: use magical mulch + green thumb on a LUSH herb (has to say lush in its name) to get roughly 40 of that herb in one go. I believe the possible range is between 24 to 48 herbs. Best used on high value herbs like azeroot or argentleaf. These two abilities also have a 1 hr CD. You should use this in between queues if you happen to see a lush version of these two herbs (otherwise do imbued).

Here is my tip, dont.
Prof are only really profitable for the first month, maybe two, and beyond that its just a gold sink.
I’ve made close to 2 million since the last patch running exactly 1 create of each proof. Every single profession is up at least 180k. Hardly a gold sink, but he would be very late to the party and need to spec it intelligently with a plan.
I make over a million gold a month currently doing not much other than making flasks and filling patron orders. Occasionally I fill a crafting order in trade. That’s definitely down from what I was making at the start, but there’s sooo much gold running around even now.
I should have stipulated, dont do anything but alchamy.
Alchemy is always a money maker
He’s planning to gather, and that still makes gold. Less gold than before yes, but still gold to be made. It’s hardly a gold sink.
Herbs might but ore? no, My main Its not worth the time to fly around and gather the market is flooded, with current content ore. You are almost better off actually going and farming older exp ore which is wild
Older expansions ore can be pretty lucrative, but also can take a while to sell. I prefer them selling right away lol. But right now with this deftness bug it is a pretty good deal to go to older expansions, true enough.
Best tip? Learn to type really fast. Public orders are rare. Most people ask in trade chat for personal orders, and if you don’t type faster than everyone else sitting around watching trade chat, you won’t get any personal orders.
