Tinfoil Hat - Botting in BGs is out of control

The past few days I have been seeing (on both horde and ally):

  • Entire teams who ignore every objective and only move in a group. WSG? 10 people flock to one person, kill, move on. For 15 minutes. You attack one? 14 other people stop their fight, mount up, run across the entire map, and 15v1 you - even if you are running the flag through them they will ignore you.
  • 3-4 players on each team with less than 100k dmg and healing, 10+ deaths and just doing laps around a small area over and over. Seen this 4 BGs in a row this morning.
  • Maps with entire teams all at honor level 31-34 all sitting one node together not engaging anything just dying, running back to try to cap a node, ignore the 5 ppl murdering them, die and repeat
  • Entire team in EOTS mount up, run off the edge together 3x in a row. Respawn, mount up, back off the cliff again. Free win but…
  • A Warrior spell reflect my pally alt’s HOJ while mid-bladestorm and targeting someone else 3x in a row in a single BG (I didn’t know you even could reflect an instant-cast spell)

Some of this has been going on for a while, but in the past 48 hours or so it has ramped up dramatically. It’s like every map is Comp Stomp with 2-3 humans poking robots and saying “come on… doooo something”

topping damage seems to be more important than winning to some players these days.

Half of them aren’t even entering damage - just running mindlessly towards an objective (like a node) and then continuously trying to cap it. Like they were only programmed for one thing so even if someone CC’s them or attacks them, they only do this one thing over and over… 10-15x in a row in a single map.

I wonder if there’s a surge in botting because the end of the season is near and people are trying to gear up toons so they can make a final rating push or get an elite set xmog or something.

Honestly, or maybe a new version of the software came out in the last day or two - it’s a huge jump vs the usual “hey watch this one DK, he just keeps trying to cap LM while I throw him off… look here he comes again… whooosh hah got him” that you typically see.

Wouldn’t that still be the same number of botters though? Same number of users, with updated software.

Well not necessarily - if you’re remotely conservative but still a monster who has to cheat, you’re probably on a disc channel supporting it. Maybe you’re taking a break because of crackdowns but then the author kicks out a new version, does an @everyone and hundreds/thousands get the new version to try it out.

I wonder if some people have been using extracurricular addons/software to top the scoreboards to impress their peers or raid leaders.

Sounds like the average battleground enjoyer.

I remember back in time, the EOTS bots, that would run from BET to FR back and forth.

I wouldn’t be surprised, just like the bots in Zaralek Cavern, they tab target anything, they would just focus pets and do full rotation. There are Solo shuffle bots too.

Now here’s the real tinfoil hat : Blizzard is putting Bots in BG’s. (comp Stompers)

What incentive is there to bot in BGs?

It’s not like farming honor is lucrative

It’s cause you’re an aug player

We’re just trying to keep the streets clean

Hey I’m trying :frowning:

Full honor set. Plus conquest points.

Honor levels. Maybe someone wants the rewards for climbing honor levels up to 500.

Most of them are very low honor level so I would assume bot for full honor set on new client then bot in SS - rinse repeat

If they banned what, like 100k accounts, and the player base is around 2-3 mil now, its like 2-5% of the player base. That got caught atleast.

I think you’re underestimating just how bad some people are at random battlegrounds.

I have not personally seen some of the truly bizarre behavior you’ve mentioned, but people ignoring objectives is sadly not uncommon for many matches.
I partly blame the terrible battleground UI. It’s so out of date, it doesn’t draw attention to the objectives like you’d expect a modern game UI to do.

Some of those are actual players that don’t know any better doing what they do in every other area of the game. Attack red things.
There are a lot of players running around on alts that really just want to fight other players right now. They grind arenas for rating and join random bgs to kick back and chill by unloading a PvE rotation on a snared priest desperately trying to get away.

You are seeing more bots because there are less real players in the game right now for them to blend in with.
