Timewalking items should be DE’d into whatever the current expansion is at the time you are running that dungeon. Nobody needs Arcane Dust and Large Shards anymore. And if you do, you can go to that version’s dungeons and raids to DE stuff.
I’d even throw that into Skinning as well. Skinning old stuff through Timewalking should give you current-expansion materials.
I understand the THEME doesn’t make sense, but this is still a GAME, and having you actively work toward worse profession materials is stupid. I can’t really say much for Mining since you have to click specific Mining nodes usually, and you can’t be getting Bismuth from Copper Mines.

Disenchanting isn’t based on Ilevel. It’s based on the expansion the item is sourced from.
Old mats are still sold and bought in the thousands and thousands every day on the AH. If you want mats from a specific expac (including current) then farm content from that expac. It’s literally that simple and doesn’t need to be made more complicated.
I know it’s not based on ilvl, I never said it was.
And old enchanting materials are definitely not sold for thousands and thousands every day. Maybe old ores and skins for transmog crafting, but not old herbs or enchanting materials. Unless you are twinking, you have zero need for old enchanting materials. And if you need the old materials, you can literally just go to the old content and farm it easier on your own than wasting time in a Timewalking group which will just make it take more time (ironically).
There’s a significant difference between FOR and IN THE in those two statements. You’ve mixed the meaning of them up somehow.
A quick look at a few old enchanting mats from various professions in TSM, Undermine and various other economy trackers for WoW:
- Large Brilliant Shard ~99,000 sold daily
- Greater Eternal Essence 3-3.5K sold daily
- Rich Illusion Dust ~80K sold daily
- Infinite Dust ~12K sold daily
- Greater Cosmic Essence 31-32K sold daily
- Dream Shard 2.3-2.5K sold daily
- Maelstrom Crystal 3.3-3.5K sold daily
- Hypnotic Dust 2.2-2.5K sold daily
- Draenic Dust ~67K sold daily
- Arkhana ~40K sold daily
- Leylight Shard ~138K sold daily
Looking at some of the other gathering mats
- Cobalt Bar ~3K sold daily
- Cobalt Ore ~3K sold daily
- Gold Ore ~750 sold daily
- Gold Bar ~5.5K sold daily
- Silver Ore ~1.7K sold daily
- Silver Bar ~1.7K sold daily
- Titanium ore ~1.5K sold daily
- Titanium Bar ~600 sold daily
- Dredged Leather ~9K sold daily
- Black Dragonscale ~3K sold daily
- Deepsea Scale 6-6.5K sold daily
Again, old mats are being bought and sold by/in the thousands every day. Some mats are obviously going to be in higher or lower demand than others for a wide variety of reasons. But there is still a pretty large and active market for old mats.
Timewalking giving mats appropriate to the expansion is literally a non-issue.
Your lucky day, Wrath gear marked Timewalking is DE’ing into TWW mats
Okay, I did misunderstand when you were talking about selling IN the thousands since most people talk about things selling FOR thousands due to rarity. But at the same time, if you want to get the old materials, it’s easy to go to the old zones and do it quicker and more efficiently than waiting for a specific expansion to appear on timewalking. You should get current enchanting materials for disenchanting from things labeled Timewalking.
And sure, you can say “what’s to stop people from stockpiling now for the release of the next expansion?” and I just say the week before prepatch, all Timewalking gear is stripped of the Timewalking label and it goes back to DEing into old materials.
I mean they have multiple seasons in an expansion and once the next season appears, you can’t upgrade the old season stuff. So why would this be any more difficult?
