TIFU by switching to Frost

So, everyone for the past couple of days kept telling me how awesome frost was. the popular sites still have it has “Top tier!” “Over preforming!” all that jazz.

So today, I switched my covenant (was at level 8 renown btw) and went with Venthyr and Frost…That was a mistake.

What happened with that spec? I read there were some nerfs people were complaining about. But I honestly just thought that was the “Sky is falling” crowd you get every expansion. I was wrong. Frost is very subpar…VERY.

Now i’m kind of stuck with this connivant unless I want to wait 2 weeks and get back into my previous one. I’m thinking i’ll just go back to Arcane anyway and say screw it. So I won’t be “optimal” but at least i’ll do damage.

Anyway, this was just a complaint.

Yeah chasing flavor of the month will do that! Chances are mages see some adjustments before mythic week so I wouldn’t worry too much, it’s always going to be changing. Venthyr arcane is gonna be fine too. I’ve had a lot of fun on Arcane so I will be playing some arcane regardless of their comparative performance.

So I did the same. What I want is one of these goobers to host a stream where I can login and call them out because so far if you go onto Youtube only 1 streamer dedicated 2 episodes to the nerf that happened.

The big sin that we’re all in agreement about here was that IV, and the pro twitch dweeb community ignored thee Nerfs and probably jumped to another spec/class to make content about. Meanwhile the first Raid dropped and M+ Dropped and low and behold who’s at the bottom 5 of DPS? THE CLASS THEY CLAIMED WOULD BE IN THE TOP 5. It’s literally in my mind Journalistic malfeasance in how bad they missed this one.

Yup, I realize now how stupid that was. Chasing FOTM specs really is for the foolish. Especially when things can change on a dime.

I’m going to stick it out. Might as well double down at this point.

My guess is Frost will get buffed in due time. They have almost no PvP/Arena representation so far and have been underperforming in PvE. This is recipe for a potential buff coming our way. Fingers crossed!

Yea i went frost mage this expansion to raid / mythic+ and to take a break from Destro Lock. I am really enjoying frost play style shattering ice lances and such but today when i took a look at the logs for castle my heart sank. I am already on Renown 7 for venth and feel like all that will go to waste if i switched to fire or a different class. I think i will sit tight for now and wait to see what buff frost gets

By what I understand you can catch up rather quick if you change to a new covenant. Its going back to and old one that’s brutal.

Silly frost mages …
Fire is Better

Is it actually better? I’m kind of stuck as Venthyr now, so if I switch to fire would it still be good?

Taken from wowhead
Night Fae is the best Covenant for Fire Mages generally. In pure single target it falls slightly behind Necrolord due to Emeni’s passive stat buff provided by the soulbind

Lead by Example. The difference between the two is small enough to justify choosing Night Fae despite this. I recommend choosing Night Fae, despite it being technically behind by <1% in single target. Since the other benefits of Necrolord are small for Fire Mages and there is only one suitable soulbind, it comes in second.

As for the other Covenants: the Kyrian’s

Radiant Spark and Venthyr’s

Mirrors of Torment don’t synergize well with Fire Mage. They aren’t terrible options, since the power of Covenants is largely based on the soulbinds. These Covenants are not bad, but are also not the best. In a raid environment, however, you can probably justify them based on the encounter.

In Mythic+ AoE is king. Regardless of whether the affixes call for more single target or AoE damage Night Fae performs best. No other Covenants come close.

So in my opinion as I run M+ with friends yes , you just won’t be performing as all as you could

Well, sadly I already switched to venthyr like a dope. So I think i’m just going to ride it out for now. Maybe they will buff frost at some point if it’s doing so poorly.

I went into SL knowing Frost was going to be dumped on. I just don’t like Fire or Arcane, so, that also helps make my choice.

Sorry you tried to chase the spec when we had 2 weeks of nerfs prior to the xpac. But now you get to be with the Vampire daddies and Gargoyle mommies. So, there’s that.

That’s the only thing i’m happy with. I wanted to be venthyr from the start. So, at least I have that.

I mean, I can always DO arcane. The night fae have a sweet ability that shortens your cool down times, but it’s not like it’s absolutely mandatory. Sure, if you want to do top end DPS. But, i’m not a hard core player, so that doesn’t matter much.

If frost is fun, play frost.

Chasing meters is a terrible idea.

Build both Legos for frost and they are amazing.

I’m also playing Frost but because it’s the spec I like the most. I didn’t like any convenant so I chose Kyrian but that covenant sucks sucks sucks. Frost is not that bad per se, it’s that all other classes are better tuned. It’s also a downer that any tank can outdamage us in AoE. We can’t dish out damage fast enough to top in charts in trash but when you have the single target legendary it becomes better.

I still need to craft the AoE legendary to see how it goes and depending on that I might consider switching covenants. Otherwise I will just go back to my alt hunter and leavy my mage to PvP as it has been for the last 3 expansions.

Venthyr Fire is like 1% behind Night Fae in sims, it means basically nothing in the actual game, it’s 100% a competitive choice for fire in a raid environment, play it if you like it (I am).

Nice things about fire venthyr

a) If you run kindling, Thrill-seeker will trigger pretty close to your combustion window giving you some extra juicy combustions.
b) Mirrors of Torment increases hot-streak generation, which synergizes well with Firestorm. Also gives you a really nice opener with the extra CD reduction on fire blast w/ in your first combustion.
c) Mirrors just does a lot of damage and it doesn’t require you to channel anything, so it’s less prone to being messed up by mechanics.

To be fair, if you look at M+ logs, arcane ends up being the one lagging behind the other two specs. It really depends what content you’re wanting to do. In open world and M+, frost isn’t bad at all. The raid is a completely differen’t story altogether.

Just build glacial fragments and you will be fine

Amen … Personally as a BG hero, my frostee a$$ is loving the pvp. Doubt much changes at 60 on a relative basis. Fun is as fun does. C ya’ll out there. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
