This bug happened to a guildmate who just accidentally bricked an Al’gethar Academy key. They picked up a ball for the event to spawn Crawth, was unable to throw it, and even after they left the instance and group and joined an arena to fix the bug, the ball didn’t respawn nor were they able to use the extra action button. We were thus unable to spawn the boss and had to abandon the key.
Bliz’s programmers are not paying attention to unintended consequences. I just flew over the are and got that WQ, but once I left the region, even porting to my garrison, the ball icon stayed put.
I do not pvp so I am not about to force myself to do something I do not like, just to see if it removes the icon Bliz screwed up on.
So just recently had this bug fixed just needed to run an arena match and it was gone
Well, I am glad for you. But, I refuse to pvp just to get rid of a bug Bliz should fix.
You can try starting (and quitting, if you’d like) a pet battle instead. I don’t know if it will work but there’s a support article about fixing another character state (pacified) by doing an arena or pet battle. Worth a shot. I’ve not been able to replicate this bug to test this possible fix. And I’ve tried. If you do try, could you report back? Would be helpful to the community.
…sigh. Well, I do not pet battle, I’ve never pet battled because I am not interested. I’ve given away all my battle pets to others who do.
But why should I have to jump through hoops to fix a bug that Bliz introduced into the game? Its on them for the problem so it should be on them to fix it. They’ve fixed things like this before, it usually took a hot fix or a maintenance window. So I’ll just see if it is fixed after the reset tomorrow.
If not, I’ll open a ticket with them since its their problem and I’m not the only one who is experiencing this. The problem even affected my mythic dungeon earlier this week. It totally broke the run, we ended up porting out because none of us could get it to work.
I just tried a pet battle and it is still there afterwards.
I edited my UI and moved the button so I can at least go into a key and not have it in my way.

Same thing happened to me, this is so dumb. And the quest isn’t up to get rid of it!
Ok, reset today and that ball is still sitting on my special action button…BLIZ you need to FIX THIS MESS.
Since it’s a known issue, continuing to post about it will accomplish nothing.

Your choice not to attempt the workaround they’ve outlined will not get the button off your screen any faster.
I should not have to perform an activity I do not like just because Bliz can’t be bothered to fix their bugs.
I finally got the ball to disappear when doing the Community Feast Event and standing close to the cooking pot and being put into the pot - I hit the chefs hat then the stir spoon and boom, that sh*tty bug is finally gone

Just had to leave Algeth’ar Academy dungeon group because I picked up the orb, but could not used the extra action button on Crawth.
I also have this stupid ball stuck. Blizz, when are you going to fix it?!?!
the quest is so bad, they are FORCING us to finish it to get rid of the ball icon. Thats what got rid of it for me.
