Throne of tides now retconned

So apparently Blizzard has changed how Throne of tides ends:

This does not really bother me as much as it might some other dungeons. The ending was sort of pointless, admittedly. He got abducted then somehow off screen frees himself anyways.

Huh interesting. I did it the other day and I was super focused on doing the next m+ but that’s an interesting thing for them to do.

Wasn’t the old reason he got kidnapped was we were supposed to get a raid of some sort?

Yeah there was gonna be an Abyssal Maw raid alongside Firelands, but they scrapped it. Next time we saw Neptulon after this dungeon he had freed himself off-screen. So it’s fine that they just retconned him getting kidnapped in the first place.

Oh for sure. I do wonder though that some of the scrapped content if they will ever go and finish it for classic in any way?

I would love to see those assets etc used in a new way.

I always remember that being the ending even in Cata?

There was a change that happened during the Cata ptr to live due to the fact that they scrapped a raid in that zone. Whatever happened set up that raid but since the raid was cancelled it never made sense.

Vashj’ir was supposed to have a raid that had Elune and Azshara wven implying Elune was Neptulon’s daughter. There was a call back to it in Nazjatar when Ozumat showed up and they mentioned Neptulon. I remember the tease for Vashj’ir was “Azshara is waiting for you” or something like that. It was so dissapointing to have to wait until BFA to finally face her.

Vashj’ir is probably one of the most interesting canceled content. It had Old Gods and everything, but I think whatever was planned was just tabled and reworked into NaJatar. (BLIZZARD is like that) so retroactively going back and removing Neptulon getting kidnapped by Ozumat is like simply tying up a loose plot thread.

They also retconned Bwonsamdi’s whole story live during BFA. I swear he makes a bargain asking Talanji to being him Sylvanas’s head because he wants the soul of a warchief to break her bond with him. But by Battle of Da’Zaralor, it was entirely retconned. He has a complelety different dialogue now.

They also completely retconned Bolvar’s Legion story and his BFA story. In Legion he sends his death knights out hunting Dreadlords. Then the story pivots in BFA that he’s stealing dead bodies from the 4th War to fight Sylvanas. This was pre Shadowlands reveal they both were serving the Jailer.

While I will miss the offscrean wrestling match between Neptulon and Ozumat, I am fine with this. As the raid where we would’ve rescued Neptulon from Ozumat was cut during Cata’s development.

Doesn’t Bwonsamdi asking Talanji to give him the head of Sylvanas happen after the raid? It is in the Zandalari recruitment chain where Talanji is officially crowned Queen of the Zandalari.

Yep. The Abyssal Maw. You can all about it, below.

I have never heard anything suggesting that and it’s not mentioned in the wiki. The only known connection between Neptulon and Elune is the Tablet of the Balancing Tides that states “the whispers of Elune and Neptulon both play on the tides in a balance of power.”

Bwonsamdi did ask Talanji for Sylvanas’ head during the Zandalari recruitment quest chain, which occurred after the raid.

I guess, I don’t remember the sequence only that it’s not there anymore.

we should just declare quests non canon lol. its where most contradictions occur and they are written by different quest designers.

Isn’t this effectively the same? Kidnapped and frees himself versus never being kidnapped.

Yeah i don’t think it’s controversial. This is probably the most quietly constructive retcon WC has done in at least a long time.

They changed the ending because the dungeon was supposed to lead onto a massive storyline which was ultimately canceled.

The story was never progressed byond that point so it makes sense to have made this slight change.

Much better than the way it was handled before, that being a couple anticlimactic Tweets saying he escaped after he just kinda showed up in Legion.

I still don’t get why they removed Neptulon taming Ozumat from the Legion Beta. When you first summoned him for the campaign, Ozumat would attack you before Neptulon reined him back. But when it came to live they removed that part.

Not sure why they removed it at the time, but if it had remained, this retcon would be a bit weirder, as Neptulon taming Ozumat implies some offscreen interaction between the two - likely Neptulon’s escape from the Naga.

Since that didn’t happen, it makes this retcon work fairly well, as we can even see Ozumat in 8.2 still in Naga territory.
