Thrive in Chaos

Has anyone tried stacking this trait while tanking?? It heals for 57 health per pain spent…now if I have it on 2 different Azerite pieces…will it heals me for 114 health per pain spent? And on all 3 pieces will it heals for 171 health per pain spent?? If that is the case…171 health per pain spent could become a HUGE amount of health healed quite often for a Vengeance DH…

Thrive in Chaos is extremely under tuned.

It stacks, yes, but it’s still extremely bad.

Let’s do some math. Let’s say you have 20% haste (which actually is approximately how much you have). That gives Fracture a 3.75s CD and Immo Aura a 12.5s CD. Assuming you never cap pain, spend 100% of generated pain, and use both of those abilities precisely on CD (ie. best case scenario for Thrive in Chaos), you’d cast 16 Fractures (25 pain each) and 4.8 Immo Auras (20 pain each) in 1 minutes, for a total of 496 pain generated and consumed per minute (max).

At 420 item level (the maximum Thrive level you can currently get), Thrive heals for 69 HP per Pain. That equates to 34,224 HP per minute. My DH in tank gear (409.68 equipped) has 380,580 HP, so that’s almost exactly 9% of my HP per minute, or about 0.15% per second.

For comparison, let’s take a look at some of the other common options for tanks: Resounding Protection, Impassive Visage, and Bulwark of the Masses (M+).

At 420 itemlevel, Resounding Protection absorbs 17810 damage every 30 seconds, or 35,620 per minute. So Thrive is, at best, a smidge behind Resounding Protection. Impassive Visage, at 420, is 6234 healed per proc, with at most 10 procs per minute, for a total of 62,340 per minute, nearly double the potency of Resounding or Thrive. Bulwark is 19,440 per shield, and at most 3 shields per minute, for a total of 58,320 per minute, a smidge behind Impassive Visage.

Now, granted, Impassive and Bulwark are much less likely to provide their maximum benefits than Resounding. But to be honest, Thrive is much less likely to provide its maximum benefits as well, since it requires optimizing your pain generation and consumption without waste. In addition, Thrive is trickle healing, while Resounding is simply a large lump shield twice a minute. If you are regularly swapping with another tank, Resounding is virtually guaranteed to provide it’s full benefit, while Thrive will most likely be overhealing for a fair chunk of the time you’re not actively tanking.

TL;DR: Thrive is very strongly undertuned. It needs a ~100% bonus before it’s really even worth considering taking. At most, you’re going to see maybe 0.5% HP per second from it, and that’s with all 3 Azerite items. On the other hand, Resounding it a lump shield for ~15% max HP every 30 seconds with 3 stacked. Impassive is a ~5% heal per proc with 3 stacked. Bulwark of the Masses is also a ~15% max HP shield per proc with 3 stacks.

Yeah, I wish Thrive in Chaos were better than it is. It’s sadly just too undertuned to be competitive with other defensive traits. If you want selfhealing, go with Soulmonger. The absorption from Soulmonger will do 2-3x as much healing as TiC will.
