The conversation between Thrall and Saurfang in the cinematic, and the line in the Subject specifically; the general idea behind it is an allegory for Metzen and Blizzard, especially concerning the writing.
Thrall initially left the Horde to go be with his family and to escape the pressures of leadership. But things have fallen apart since he left, with constant turmoil, culminating in Sylvanas taking the Horde down a dark path, perhaps the darkest one yet. Metzen left Blizzard around the same time and for similar reasons, and the writing of recent expansions has been…less-than.
The way I interpret it, Thrall is Metzen, Sylvanas is Golden, and Saurfang is the voice of the fans. “Do you know what she’s done while you’ve been hiding?”.
Or maybe even more broadly, Thrall is the founders of Blizzard, and Sylv is the current leadership at Actiblizz.
Chris, we’re not asking you to be our savior and to lead the writing staff again, but we hope you’ll at least fight for it.
Golden has written Sylvanas. Why should she orient herself as the villain?
Also, I think you’re assigning way too much responsibility/blame on certain individuals who don’t really deserve it and are reading between lines that aren’t there.
Haha maybe. It was just something that occurred to me while watching the new 20 minute cinematic compilation (which is great, btw).
But if there’s someone in the writing room who snuck some of this subtext in there, know that I see you and understand.
There’s a fair amount of conjecture in the OP, but you really should read and consider some of what she wrote involving Sylvanas before confirming the opposite of the OP’s claim.
It’s definitely not a self insert, however on another subject it is heavily influenced, “positively” and negatively.
If you’re implying what I think you’re implying, then it’s possible, but we also have to acknowledge that art is invariably always going to be influenced in some way by life. The context of our surroundings is inescapable.
I’m only commenting on the idea OP put forward that Golden has written herself as the antithesis of the voices of the fans. I don’t think there’s much evidence at all to support that, and I highly doubt any writer would ever want to establish that position for themself to begin with.
Ah, I see the hangup you’re having. I’m not the one who implied that, you inferred it and that has shaped your comments. I merely put forth that someone on the writing team snuck that subtext into the story of the cinematics.
If you are both “interpreting” the subtext a certain way and making an argument for author intentionality by stating that a writer snuck said subtext in there then you are indeed the originator of the idea.
I don’t think a single writer can stealthily “sneak” that subtext in there anyway. It’s sort of the foundation of the entire war campaign arc. You can’t just make changes like that unilaterally.
The only input she’s actually had in BfA, as far as we are aware, is that she pushed Calia. Things like Sylvanas’s Warbringers short, as an example of her being an evil, overly emotional lunatic, were finished before Golden was even hired.
Pretty much this,it’s a given I’m no fan of the Banshee wench but Golden really doesn’t deserve the hate and harassment she’s been getting on and off. She just writes the books and debatably some of the game story but mostly the books. To my understanding, that’s more the work of different writers and some speculating of Ion having a hand [also debatable given that was never his specialty,it’s more business oriented peppered with the early raid designs] But I’d say go ahead with him anyways since the photoshopped memes are lulsy [even if the Sylvanas make up put on him makes him look more like Pearl’s henchman in MST3K]
Aye,Hence why it sucks to see Golden get so much vitriol her way. :-/ It’s fine to not be keen on her books [I’m personally not a fan with the exception of Arthas] but good lord some people can go overboard on expressing their distaste. [apparently a bit after the animatic people were bringing out the collective torches and pitchforks her way]
Remember when people complained about Alliance bias because her Twitter header was Genn, Anduin, and Velen in a car wearing sunglasses? Remember when she had to change it to a Horde one?
Oh yeah most definitely,I’m not discriminating about any of the salt levels,I play both factions and found the artwork kinda adorable really. Guess this is why we can’t have nice things regardless of faction. ._.
