Thoughts on prot paladins in 5 mans

I was wondering how viable prot paladins are for 5 man content. I just wanna be a tank for 5 mans and when it comes to raids i will be healing. I’ve done research, but the responses vary wildly. I understamd the prot paladins shortcomings, but i just wanna know if, with good play, are prot paladins welcome and viable for 5 man content. Thanks in advance.

They are just fine in 5 mans, although they tend to blow through mana and need to drink. But in most 5 mans either a warrior, druid, or pally is just fine.

Prot paladins hold great aoe agro, way more reliable than warrior… the only issue is they need time to put down their spells before dps hit or everything goes to hell so if your dps isn’t on the same page as you things will go south fast.

They can hold aggro well enough. They need some time to acquire aggro first since they don’t have the same snap AoE threat that a Druid or Warrior have, but once they have it, they have it.

The biggest issue is that they’ll drink after every pull (or every other), and that really slows the clear times down. That, and a lack of taunt makes certain bosses with threat drops impossible for them to tank.

So how does a paladin deal with threat drops?

As a horde player I couldn’t tell you how viable they are but I can tell you that I would take you regardless as there isn’t many tanks to choose from.

You can invite classes that match the requirement to drink for mana.

Thats good to know. Ill have to give it a shot and make it work. Its either paladin or druid, as i also would like to heal, and of the two i would much rather be a paladin.

It’s great but its also a huge benefit to yourself to mark targets becausr the first judgement which should be righteousness will be the mob with the most aggro on you

I have downloaded a mod to quickly mark targets, i just hope dps follow suit lol.

Keep trying and hope you get it back. Hope the boss dies faster than the DPS that gets aggro.

So basically i need to research which dungeon bosses have threat drops and let them know beforehand that when it happens stop dps till i get it back.

Stopping the DPS won’t help.

Some bosses completely wipe your threat. You’re essentially going to have to generate threat exceeding what the DPS had done up to that point.

It will take you so long to get aggro back that it’s not worth them stopping DPS. They should just continue and kill the boss. The less time they spend with aggro, the better.

If anything, the boss might wipe their threat, as well, then move back to you.

I tanked just about every dungeon up to brd in holy spec, paladins dont start to be a detriment till 40mans so you should be able to do everything below that, if youre leveling prot then it should be alot easier. Mana is the biggest issue though, drinking after every pull can waste your time and when you run out of mana youre kind of hung out to dry. when you get 40 though youll get judgement of wisdom to generate some mana in combat so thats a nice bandaid

Yeah i figured mana and lack of a taunt would be issues. Drinking all the time wont bother me so much. Ive tanked deadmines as a druid and had to stop every 2 pulls for the healer to drink. Didnt bother me at all. Part of teamwork.

Use seal of wisdom instead of retribution at lvl 38, dont judge it, it eill cost too much mana, and down rank consencration if needed.

I am having a blast lvling as a prot pally… lvl 31 atm…

At lower lvl dungeons up to SM, you can use BoW instead of might and you wont need to drink every pull… I think I was drinking once or twice in dm and sfk…

just tab cycle through the mobs, hitting them one at a time and If its less than 3 mobs you dont need to waste mana on concecration…

Get a threat metre and save your judgement for when you need to build threat on a mob,

The biggest problem you will have is either Hunters multishotting or mages going all out before you even have concecration down… So just let them know to wait a second before they start their aoe fest…

Apart from a couple of bad pugs, tanking is a lot of fun

if there’s a warrior in the group, ask if they’re ok with taunting once you lose aggro on a boss.

if all else fails, just blessing of protection the healer so they don’t pull aggro and just let whichever dps gets aggro tank the rest of the fight/do your best to grab it back.

oh, and blessing of salvation is your friend.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. Looks like ill have a blast on this toon after all.

Threat drops are pretty easy to deal with. Just save judgement of righteousness till it pops off, drop a max rank consecration, hit the dps who took aggro with blessing of protection, or, if it’s a caster boss like Ras, blessing of sacrifice.

One last question. Should i really reroll to human for their racials or are dwarves just as good. Figured with threat coming mostly from int and spellpower that the human weapon racials wont make much of a difference.
