Thoughts about Private Servers

Given how many tickets I issued in 6 months as a raid leader after the master looting had gone wrong (or someone rolled then went “Ohnodon’twant”), I fully understand and appreciate loot trading in MC+ raids. Pugs are a free for all, but organised loot centric raids will know if you trade your gear to someone else in the raid, and you’ll get pinged for it.

Google docs is a god send, When i pug raided and ML’d on P server for MC and so on. I had my internet wife mark EVERYTHING and we should it to the discord every raid, before and after, and no one ever had a problem. While mistakes do happen, that’s the fault of the ML and it show’s in there rep, personally i’m against loot trading but what’s a guy to do. I’ll deal with it.

In Vanilla we had a plugin that would track every item received blue and above, and log it, as well as your inventory, then you’d upload your savedvariables file and it would post it on a website.

I’ll probably write something like that again if the old mods aren’t resurrected.

Yea and someone who j-walks should be locked up in max security prisons… wow dude. Please virtue signal harder… I dont think anyone got it.

Is that not a bit of an extreme reaction? Locked up for life? How do you equate running a PS the same as murdering another human in terms of punishment?

Thats the person that reports anyone who disagrees with them… its really not shocking to see them say something so ridiculous.

Good post with some interesting points. It still boggles my mind that people would put up with all the issues of private servers just to save the price of a sub… it’s about the worst conceivable way I could think of to save $15.

I’m grateful they exist though, even with the issues that seem inherent. I doubt we’d have Classic without them.

This is it right here. Some of us have tried them, not because it’s free (I’m ready for Blizz to take my money… but they haven’t given me reason to since 7.3.5) but because there might be a private server out there that has that favorite iteration we enjoy.

tbh… if I have a sub to retail and I play retail regularly, why should anyone care if I am dipping my toe in the big boy pool? I payed my troll toll, leave me be.

Private Servers don’t use anything that belongs to blizzard, the maps are generated off meshes and the server is completely custom. There is nothing on the back end that belongs to Blizzard. The 1.12.1 Client belongs to blizzard though. People use the 1.12.1 client to connect to the Server. Providing a outlet for a connection of a companies client isn’t theft of IP. Trust me. In a fair fight that doesn’t come down to cash, Blizzard would be wasting time. They wouldn’t win.

I retained a active sub to WoW During legion as i played on Elysium. After Blizzard went after Felmyst I cancelled my sub. I paid for WoW back during Vanilla, TBC, etc… and I was paying for WoW at that time. From a moral perspective I saw nothing wrong with it. I had ever right to play private servers. When Blizzard decided to get involved i took away my 15 bucks a month from them.

Again though, I have yet to see any real evidence. Just internet “law experts” that claim I should trust them based on them saying they’re right.

Plus, you said WoW Classic is “abandonware” then provided an argument as to why private servers that has nothing to do with abandonware.

So you’ll forgive me if I don’t just trust you because you said so =P

They just want to play a version of the game that Blizzard isn’t offering anymore, I know I prefer some older expansions to the current one.

I think what Blizzard is doing with Classic WoW is the right way to go, if they do it well enough it will pull most of that crowd here.

It’s a pool of both. I meant vanilla also, not speaking about Classic. Blizzard wouldn’t be able to stop a damn thing if it was a equal playing field.

Balderdash!

Private servers literally pull all the maps out of the old Retail client. It is a process that takes a few hours as they pull out a host of things that are directly from the client. Then they use all of the “Intellectual Property” including the names of items, the world concept, the item databases etc that Blizzard still owns.

You have no clue what you’re talking about, and they are directly using the Intellectual Property of Blizzard Entertainment now owned by Activision Blizzard.

Nostalrius did get a C&D and stopped. The only reason that Blizzard didn’t continue to stomp on others is that they weren’t charging and they were investigating the very interest that we’re all here to express.

I fully expect every Private Server to get a C&D sent out the day after Classic releases.

You have no idea about emulation, look it up.

vMaps and Maps are generated off the Client, they are not actually extracting anything.

The Client is the intellectual property of Blizzard Entertainment. You are literally digging your hole deeper.

I don’t understand the pServer hate that is going around. They are literally comprised of a bunch of folks that just love the game. The community feels very similar to the original Vanilla community. There was corruption on a few, yes, but that had nothing to do with the players. The stark difference on pServers is that they are international and might be the only downside imo. there are bugs and always that lingering question of is this 100% blizzlike, but the devs tried there best to recreate the original experience for the most part. I’m looking forward to Classic and would never look backwards towards pServers if they make it as authentic as they promise. pServers aren’t this counter-culture that they are made out to be, imo. Just a bunch of folks that want to play Vanilla.

Must be your alt then.

edit: And stop trolling one of my threads again.
