This Will Be The Downfall Of Classic

In the live game right now Trade chat has literally become overrun with almost nothing else but bots and gold sellers. Yes it’s 2019 and these things have become so rampant that we really shouldn’t expect less but personally I think this will DESTROY classic. Classic was built on people spamming Trade for groups to run dungeons, raids, and BGs, recruit for guilds, and sell goods so they could make enough gold to play. Bots and gold sellers will undoubtedly make an appearance in classic and I think they’re going to make it difficult or impossible to make groups, recruit, or trade in trade chat.

I’d like to hope that with the increased difficulty of Classic people will take more pride in their characters and won’t purchase anything from these sites thus eliminating them from existence, but we all know that won’t happen. I just hope that Blizzard takes gold selling far more seriously in Classic than they do in the Live Game. In the live game we have tools to help us find groups or recruit so the impact of gold sellers taking over Trade is reduced. Still, if gold sellers are even partially allowed to take over trade I’m worried it will have a huge impact on the entire game and player’s enjoyment of it.

With Trade chat being the only means of people selling items, forming groups, or making guilds, allowing bots and gold sellers could definitely destroy the game.

Make authentication mandatory so noone can be hacked and the gold sellers will be less able to run the economy. Nobody to steal from.

Pro Tip: You don’t actually form dungeon groups from trade chat (yeah it’s the ‘go to’ for bads, but why should that impact you?).

Well, no one uses trade chat for anything now… which is why you only see gold selling and boosts. What else would you use it for when there are communities, specific channels, guile’s, LFG tools? Trade chat won’t be like that in classic because people will use it instead of use the other tools because they won’t exist.

Honestly one of the first things I always do when making a new alt is turn off trade chat. It has long been a repository for spam of all kinds.

If you honestly don’t think Trade was used nearly exclusively to form dungeon groups then you clearly never played Classic. Even raids were formed using Trade.

gee, if only blizzard entertainment would actually spend money to hire game masters whose sole job was to look for gold sellers out in the wild and permaban them for 40 hours a week

If i remember correctly general chat only posted to one city but trade posted to anyone in any city. Maybe im wrong.

The only place I’ve seen gold spam is in videos of Private Servers. Maybe its just being on an RP server, but its all Donald Trump jokes and people arguing about some random game thing.

Could just be lucky, but I’m not sure if its really a problem, especially with RCR.

Can’t stop the gold sellers. They will make big bucks with classic. Back in the day they were making 150 bucks just for epic mount gold

How can I make this any clearer ? I have to yell.

STOP ALLOWING CARRIES FOR GOLD.

Period. End of story.

I did play vanilla - more importantly, I played real MMORPGs prior to WoW which required you to always group. Trade chat spam is the lowest common denominator for bad players who have no idea how to socialize and get things done.

It will likely become a problem, at some point, but unlike Battle for Azeroth, 15 years of gold won’t be available at launch.

Well, you can expect additional channels to be used by many people immediately upon logging in (/world or /lfg or /LookingForGroup). Yes, you’ll see a lot of low-levels that are learning the ropes spamming in /trade and /general, but if you want to find groups, there are communication tools to accommodate this

Pugs didn’t use /trade channel. It was /LFG channel. And almost all trade took place on AH, not trade chat or in person. The main exception being enchanters, because couldn’t sell their product on AH.

Gold spammers were occasionally annoying in vanilla, but I don’t remember them dominating chat. We’ll see if it’s different this time around. I have a hard time seeing it destroying the game, though.

Never happening, it has been this way since classic. Sometimes people also want a specific item they don’t want to spend dkp on or it never drops or the highest bidder will have more dkp… so buying an epic drop isn’t always a bad thing. I get my alts boosted all the time because heroic raids are easy and boring and I don’t want to deal with wipes on stuff I cleared months ago.

Trade chat should be used for trade. Use LFG for groups. But the thing is, no one uses trade like they used to because of the tools we have now, which is why you only see gold and boost spamming.

Your biggest issue with this is that most of these accounts are hacked accounts so when Blizzard permabans them they’re permabanning a potential customer that could one day come back to the game. I think permasquelching them would be a more reasonable answer because it would allow the account to exist while completely removing the ability of the spammer to do what they’re doing.

but then they could just liquidate all of their stuff or use them to farm to give stuff to other gold sellers; they don’t need to use that character to advertise

and another thing; they’d really oughta mention that blizzard will never sell gold via. a loading screen tip

I mean trade was used, but we also used our guilds, networks we created, and other mediums. The bulk of organized groups didn’t come from trade - those were primarily the PuGs (which didn’t really get past MC) raids and dungeons. Guilds were a far better way to group.

For endgame, yes, by then most competent players are in a guild and mostly grouping with guildmates. But for low level dungeons, where you looking for a group of similar level toons, most would put together a pug in /LFG channel. It’s also a great way to meet new players and build up your friends list while leveling, maybe find new players to invite to your guild, or meet people who will invite you to their guild. It’s an important part of community building in Classic/vanilla, IMO.
