The story of the next patch makes no sense. Not all elves and trolls have a conflict. This is mainly an Amani and Blood Elf issue. There’s no reason, for example, for a Nightborne to have prejudice against a Zandalari troll. It feels like they’re trying to force the stupid “let’s all unite and fight evil” narrative at all costs, even if it doesn’t make sense within the story. There is no reason to unite every type of elf and troll as if they were all peoples locked in the same conflict. It’s like trying to unite China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, and Singapore just because they’re all Asian.
Take the Darkspear trolls, for example. They were always an isolated people who never cared about, or had any interest in, restoring the old troll empires. In fact, they were looked down upon by the other troll tribes because of that. So you can’t even argue that they’d hold a grudge because of the ancient Troll Wars or the Empire of Azshara. Then, the first time they meet elves is during the Third War, when they encounter the Night Elves, and they actually end up fighting together against Archimonde. Nothing specific happens that would make them hate all elves. As for the Blood Elves, the Darkspear meet them within the Horde, and they support them whenever possible, including during the rebellion against Garrosh. Vol’jin himself even says during Cataclysm that the Horde is the Darkspear’s family and that they would never join Zul because of that. So now, all of a sudden, the Darkspear hate every elf and need to “reconcile” with them? Do you see how they create a conflict that never existed just to force this love-and-peace, “let’s all sing around the campfire” narrative?
Or take the Zandalari and the Nightborne. They lived in isolation and had never even met each other. Their first real contact is when the Nightborne leader saves Princess Talanji at the beginning of Battle for Azeroth. And now they suddenly have a historical conflict too?
And i dont even said about the conflict between the troll tribes, which also make this whole “next unite everyone” lore horrible.
Honestly, the whole idea of reuniting all elves was a bad idea from the very beginning. Not every elven people has unresolved conflicts, and the elves aren’t a single race that simply split apart. They’re essentially completely different nations, not like orc or tauren tribes that divided and later reunited. The idea of bringing all elves together is just as ridiculous as trying to unite every East Asian country into a single group. Everything in this game’s lore has been reduced to sentimentality, progressive “woke” culture, and the moral lesson of “See, kids? War is bad. Different races shouldn’t have conflicts in World of WARcraft.” That’s basically what it has become. This is peak millennial writing.
