This laptop market is exciting

With AMD putting tons of pressure on Intel with the 4000 series mobile CPU’s, you are now finding some great deals from both teams!

For the most part, AMD is winning, but we are seeing 6 core 12 thread Intel chips with GTX 1660ti’s for under 1k. This is no doubt from the competition. The previous 3750H couldn’t hold a candle to anything more than a mid-level I5. Now with 6 & 8 core processors in laptops that are more powerful than last-gen desktop chips AND paired with dedicated CPUs for $650-$1,000 from both teams.

Below are some recent examples of some nice laptops for different use-cases. And for the most part, you cannot build a better/cheaper PC if you factor in the keyboard, speakers and a monitor. Granted some of these displays kind of suck.

It’s good to see more CPU competition in the laptop space, especially for those in the market for a low-to-midrange laptop, but it’d be nice if AMD’s presence were larger in mid-to-highend models with better fit+finish… think Dell XPS, Razer Blade, MacBook Pro. Once that happens, AMD can start positioning itself as a premium CPU vendor in the minds of the mass consumer and extend its brand appeal beyond the tech enthusiast sphere.

Probably won’t see much of that until at least late 2020/early 2021, though.

And it may get even more interesting when Intel releases Tiger Lake-U:

Reminder that all leaks should be taken as such

What griefs don’t know is that those chips are 28w, they had to be unlocked to compete, unlike AMDs Renoirs chips which are at 15w.

for example, Apples best 2020 13 inch laptop uses i5-1038NG7 (a 10 nm chip like the i7-1165G7 and is also running at 28w)

This is what happens when you use a 28w laptop,

or this one

could be great performance, just don’t burn up your laptop because its running at 28w during heavy loads

I want to say the benchmark doesn’t scale linearly with cores. Can’t imagine a 4 core 8 thread cpu out performing even an 8 core 8 thread cpu in multi core performance. Definitely impressive results though.

Going to be interesting when Intel launches their 7nm desktop chips. Their improvements with the igpu are pretty impressive.

You, you do know that every Ryzen 4000 chip I’ve tested runs way behind spec right? My wifes 4500u hits 35-40W burst and settles in around 25-30W. The 4700u I had, hit as high as 45W then settles around 30W. My 4800H with turbo will sustain 64W around 3.9-4GHz as long as temps stay below 90*C which they do. I am happy to see this but don’t kid yourself.

As for Grief, I welcome competition!
