I actually saw the Lion King the other day!
And it wasn’t too bad! The lack of expression in the photo realistic animals and restrained cinematography robbed it of a lot of its magic, but things picked up in the second half. They started doing more dramatic shots and since we can better register fear/aggression in animals, they were more emotive leading up to and throughout the third act.
It was, of course, technically impressive and like with Aladdin, Disney impressed me with the attention to detail they put into it, especially the environment. I surprised as being able to recognize that the second act clearly took place in the highlands of Eastern Africa- compared to the generic jungle of the original. In conjunction with the Swahili and other detailed elements, it really helped cement for me that this was a story taking place in Eastern Africa and not some generic pan-African setting. Clips on smaller screens and tiny speakers do not do this film justice.
A couple of animals still out of place, but whatever. They did what they could without changing iconic scenes too much.
And the songs were just as good as you remember. I even liked their rendition of Be Prepared, which makes sense in this film, as the Hyenas are competent and less buffoonish- so a song where Scar spends most of the verses demeaning them (and them goosestepping) makes less sense.
But man if my nostalgia for the film wasn’t doing a lot of the legwork in a lot of scenes in order to make up for the less expressive characters and more subdued acting.
