My characters so far are an Undead Fairy and a Vampire Cow.
Not actually getting to pick my Covenant is kind of funny.

What do you mean? Is there a bug that takes away your freedom of choice?
Yeah it’s called unbalanced covenants for some classes that completely gimp you if you don’t pick it.
Would you prefer Tyrande or Kael’thas?
Completely?
The most amusing part is that you believed blizzard would be able to balance covenants.
Never believed that for a second, lol.
Your head looks incredibly tiny
take off your helmet and you get the same effect. gg
I had no problem picking the covenant I wanted.
Are you in a top world progression guild?
If not, play what you enjoy first and foremost. You’ll enjoy the game for longer.
Or is the issue the race of the character? Do you not feel encouraged to pick your race as well, like you can pick your covenant?
Or do you feel like you are forced into both?
I tried them all as Both a Hunter and Shaman.
For the Hunter the only 2 options are Bastion and Night Fae. Flayed Shot is completely worthless and Death Chakram is forgettable at best and only really mesh decently well with Survival as the spec is focus-starved while the other two are mostly cooldown locked.
As for Enhance its the same deal but reversed. Both the NF and Bastion ability are clunky at best, one is just yet another ramp-up button in a spec already filled with them, the other is a melee range CHANNELED CAST, which kind of completely clash with the gameplay flow of a melee spec.
On the other hand you have Primordial Wave that meshes absolutely perfectly with both Ele and Resto and Chain Harvest that meshes perfectly with Enhance as its the only of the 4 that benefits from Maelstrom Weapons as a mechanic and also works well with Resto as you can combo it with Unleash Life for great results.
So no i don’t feel like i had a real choice, when something feels bad and does bad damage and doesn’t mesh with the rest of your kit at all, you don’t need to be a top world raider to ignore it.
And yes, the Race of my characters is the one thing i always refused to min-max and mostly always got away with it, there’s not really a race available to Shamans that fits very well for Venthyr anyway.
I guess the only “choice” i made there is deciding to focus on Enhance as my DPS spec for my Shaman instead of Ele like i had originally planned as i really wanted to do the Revendreth story on one of my characters and the covenant is terrible for almost every spec except Enhance and Paladins and Priests, which i don’t play in the later 2 cases.
I mean, that sounds nice in theory… but no.
WIth the game progressing further and further into the expansion that illusion is slowly starting to fade away. I have been in groups that have removed people for not being certain covenants, I have been declined groups because of my cov choice so far as to me actually full on changing cov because I got sick of hearing the garbage.
So I guess there is a hint of truth to what you suggest, so long as you wish to play solo OR get lucky enough to find the 2 in 10 group that doesn’t care what cov you are.
It’s a broken system, people need to stop defending it.
Like most things, it was good in theory, poor execution.
As with most everything from Activision-Blizzard.
Either way, point of the thread is just that ending up with combos i prolly would had never considered due to how the system played out is pretty funny.
I do enjoy the Night Fae storyline a lot more than expected too.
While I do agree a number of covenants are poorly balanced…Night Fae Enhancement isn’t one of them. Yes having a channeled spell as a melee class is a bit clunky, but by no means is it weak. You just have to learn where to fit it
Same my horde rogue going NF feels very funny in the way that its the only covenant that doesnt fit rogue >.< and that all cosmetic also don’t fit rogues
And often its not even the class covenant spells but just the lore and aesthetic of the zone that really dont fit >.<
I was 100% sure i would be able to stick with MY choice , blood elf , venthyr rogue … took 2 weeks then i just couldn’t handle how badly that ability was created(flagellation) .
So yea its funny , instead of blood and vampires , its fairies and glitter for my rogue
Unfortunately havoc dh are so bad in pvp that you absolutely HAVE to go night fae for an ability that gives you a win condition.
I agree completely the NF quest has been the funnest so far, the first “Play” you do, amazing. loved it.
I mean, I have removed people who play Feral Druid over Balance, does that mean they should remove talents and specs?
Its all part of the game my friend.
Its not the system that’s broken, its the people using it.
Meanwhile, Elysian Decree is broken in M+.
Always a check and balance right?
So best to pick the one you align with the most.
For me, that was Night Fae, even though its not considered the best.
It’s true that for people min/maxing the covenant choices are constrained right now. For people who don’t feel the need to squeeze every ounce of performance from their class in order to enjoy themselves though? No, pick the one(s) you like.
I’m looking forward (not really) to the forums lighting up with “Let me change Covs and keep my renown without penalties!” threads when Bliz gets around to making changes to covenant synergies with specific underperforming cov/class combinations.
Me? I picked the covenants I felt best fit with the characters. Then again, I don’t care about min-maxing. Some cov/class combinations absolutely should be looked at but for a whole lot of casuals choosing whichever one you like works just fine.
