This Is A Problem

First I don’t have an active account so I can’t post in GD so if a mod wants to move this that’s good but I won’t be able to respond to anyone, though I don’t care so yeah.

A friends kid wanted to try WoW so he made a starter account and then made a Human Paladin. A bit later he asked me about the gear he saw everyone else wearing in the starter zone and the thing they were riding. So I told him about heirloom gear and he trotted off to keep playing. It didn’t take him long though to stop and log out so I asked him if he didn’t like the game. His response is interesting because it is from the perspective of someone who didn’t know a lot about WoW and had never played it.

*He found it boring and slow. He didn’t hardly have any attacks to use. He spent most of his time standing there waiting for the two abilities he had to be useable and that wasn’t fun.

*He thought the quests in the starter zone were dumb and made no sense at all. Why, that close to their capital city, were they tolerating the Orcs and Goblins being there? Why didn’t they bring in their army and wipe them out? How did they all get there in the first place?

*He felt the heirloom gear made the game pay to win because it made them stronger, tougher, and it gave them perfect stats and leveled with them so they never had to worry about getting good gear, and the mount gave them an advantage in being able to get around faster. And all they had to do to get it was buy it.

*He was also dismayed at how rude the other players were, at least when they didn’t just totally ignore him.
It took him about thirty minutes to walk away from the game in disgust. He’s done.

If no one sees this as a problem, well, you’re blind. This game has lost a ton of its players and continues to do so, and NEW players feel DISCOURAGED from playing. Ask yourself this, when was the last time you saw an honest to god new player out and about? Now how many players have you seen running around in heirlooms? Yeah. Thought so. While other games do everything they can to draw in new players this one seems to actively discourage them.

Go post on reddit. Just because this forum doesn’t require a sub doesn’t mean it is the place to go to cry about retail.

This seems like an “I’m asking for a friend” scenerio…

I made this character because I was dead set on going to Loch Modan. I gimped myself again.
I was a fool - they destroyed it in the Cataclysm expansion and I was just as devastated then as I was the second time around.

So he didn’t like the game. You realize that happens, right? Not all games appeal to all people.

I’ve tried countless RPGs over the years, MMO and not. Some I got into. Some bored me in 30 minutes. Instead of thinking the entire game is wrong and should be changed to cater to me, I logged out and went off to try another game.

Good on your friend’s kid for having the capacity to realize he doesn’t like a game, and to log out instead of feel pressured to play because somebody else is trying to convince him it’s worth playing.

I like you!

Sounds like one of those “It’s really about me” but making up a fictitious person lol.

That kid sounds like my son, who played WoW for about a week at the end of WoD (he was about 10) and then left in complete boredom. He loves Starcraft, though.

Read earlier that over 100m accounts never made it past 20.

You can purchase a character boost if you want all your abilities given to you. You can also play a trial of the character classes at high level to see if it has the style of play you want. WoW doesn’t give you a ton of things to do as a new player because you need to learn your abilities bit by bit. You’re a low level adventurer, you don’t have much, but as you grow and learn, you will get more.

Whatever RP reason you want to make up… seriously. Here’s one off the top of my head. Because the armies of Stormwind are taxed from the new war with the horde… which is why the King has send soldiers to Northshire to seek out local adventurers who can help quell the situation.

*He felt the heirloom gear made the game pay to win because it made them stronger, tougher, and it gave them perfect stats and leveled with them so they never had to worry about getting good gear, and the mount gave them an advantage in being able to get around faster. I’ve never heard of heirloom gear called pay to win, but okay. Regardless… it’s something that people who have already reached a certain point in the game can use to help their alts speed through things that they have already done. It’s also optional… if you want a pure experience with an alt, don’t use it. If you want to power level… use it. Once he has reached the requirements that those -alts- have reached… he can purchase heirlooms too. But blizzard wants -new- players to experience the game as intended.

*He was also dismayed at how rude the other players were, at least when they didn’t just totally ignore him.

Well, I can’t argue that. My suggestion would be to try another server. Maybe an RP server. In my experience most RPers are generally more engaging than PvPers or people on Normal servers. (Not saying this is 100% true, just my experience.)

It took him about thirty minutes to walk away from the game in disgust. He’s done.

Thirty Minutes doesnt sound like a lot of time to get a feel for a game as big as WoW. I think he needs something with a little more instant gratification. Definitely don’t sign him up for WoW Classic.

Anyway, I hope he finds what he’s looking for, but WoW isn’t for everyone. Never has been. Never will be. A lot of people agree with you, too. Everyone wants something different from their MMORPGs and WoW offers what it offers. Some people love it. Some people hate it. Some people miss vanilla and are waiting for Classic. WoW is still a popular game, and has it’s fan base. I’m personally waiting for Classic. Good luck to you!

WoW devs announced a loooong time ago (2010) that 70% of the people that try the game don’t make it past level 10 before they quit. This is nothing new; this person just had a typical experience.

Is this the make stuff up as we go RP thread?
Well my friend’s kid tried the starter account.
Got hooked and now has a $15 dollar a month habit!

He loves questing with level scaling and heirloom gear, Azerite gear, TF/WF RNG, WM, the 30% buff he gets for being alliance, free 400 gear this week for alliance, LFR, LFD, and he loves spending his dad’s money on tokens, mounts, and pets.
Oh did I mention he loves pet battling too!

Did I do it right? LOL

What are all the free bonuses for being alliance? Do they dominate war mode or something?

From the complaining in GD, it appears that (in a stunning reversal since my day of playing retail WoW) the Horde significantly outnumbers the Alliance on every server, meaning that buffs that are coded as “whichever side is outnumbered in this PvP clash gets them” always go to the Alliance.

Read this mess in a high squeaky voice:
They dominate solo playing noobs who have WM on for the extra 10% incentive at FP’s and WQ’s because ally get a sweet piece of gear every week for killing Horde because in the begining Horde smashed allies so bad and camped FP’s and WQ’s that all the allies shut it off and said they don’t have da same numbers as horde and complained so now they all have it on and camp FP’s smashing solo noobs that dont know how to group and mount a counter attack but they know how to use the forums on their alts and make crap up. LOL

Im really sorry for the grammar but this in a high squeky voice the best way to describe GD qhen it comes to Hordemode. I mean Warmode. LOL

I sense some bitterness here

So a child with very limited cognitive reasoning capacity and lack of maturity found a game designed for adults to be boring?

Surely you jest.

(You do realize that just because the ESRB rating allows teenagers to buy it does not mean it was designed for them, right?)

I think there are still a lot of servers that are primarily Alliance. For War Mode, servers don’t matter, really. When you enable War Mode, you are placed in a shard with other War Mode players. So, your server could be 99% Alliance. But, if you enable War Mode, suddenly you’re on a shard with 99% Horde. Possibly surrounded by both Alliance and Horde from servers you’ve never even heard of.

I’ve read way too many WM complaints by people who only have it on for the buff.
If they really wanted PvP they would join a raid or form one and take back those FP’s.
So they are making their own problem. Instead of seeking the PvP solution.
This is why neitger side should get any buff or incentive.
You wanna fight? Fight fir the sake of the fight.
All the bonus does is get a bunch of people in WM that otherwise wouldn’t have it on.

I think that WM populations may not have been so one sided in the begining if not for the extra incentive.
Which lead alliance to getting roflstomped and now a 30% bonus and free 400 gear.

This post screams “I made this up to support my view” as well.
