I love the idea of a mage tank, but have no flippin idea how to implement it.
Enhancement Shaman - Bolster your defenses with the elements. Increased armor, dodge, and tons of strong elemental shields. Improved totem utility. Dominant tanks for elemental type damage and for neutralizing casters in pvp.
(The current dual wield playstyle of enhancement would transfer over to a Runemaster shaman spec. They are melee spiritualists in tune with Azeroth’s leylines who bolster their fists with elements which they contain with rudimentary rune magic.)
Savagery Hunter - A fourth hunter spec with increased armor and dodge that can stagger damage using their companion. The boss always has the hunter targeted, but the hunter’s pet can jump to the aid of their master and block incoming blows. Through a spirit bond, both man and beast work together to tank.
Mechgineering Tinker - The tinker will never put themselves in harms way when they have their inventions to fall back on. With the clever use of a mech suit, a gnome or goblin can withstand sizeable blows from the fiercest of enemies. Focused on mimicing the best abilities of all tanking classes, the Tinker tank is highly versatile and can switch between a kiting mode, an aoe mode, a tank and spank mode, etc.
Lots of shields. If look at lock demon Armour pvp talent. It makes locks very hard to kill. Then add shields and there a tank.
People who are willing to tank already are, adding new tank specs/classes might add a few but the number will hardly be noticeable.
Bottom line, the majority of people simply do not enjoy that role and not much will change that
This is all super cute but doesn’t address the real issue which is how terrible pug dps is.
This game does NOT need new tank specs. The #1 reason why people don’t tank: The extremely caustic environment of M+ and raiding. If the tank(s) make a mistake and wipe the group, nothing but screaming and ranting on how much they suck. To all of those who do this: start tanking.
My only response to this argument, is to get a guild. People are going to be mean and that’s just the facts. It has nothing to do with tanking. It’s just good old fashioned human nature.
Play with some friends or a guild and get your bearings, once you get good and making fewer mistakes, pugs won’t be as cancerous, because you wont give them anything to complain about.
It’s already in the game. Talent for an extra shield on blink, put your azerite talents into healing on blink / bigger shields, congrats you are now extremely beefy. If you really wanted to and your party let you, you could probably tank anything except Mythic+/raids
Yeah, I remember that. Definitely a much smaller problem than “My role doesn’t matter because other players won’t die.” though. I would gladly take an ocassionally bad group that wipes and has an angry clueless person over what we have now: groups that never fail but are consistently frustrating and alienating.
Obviously a range DH spec would involve them using their Warglaives as boomerangs
I do a lot of pugs. Mostly the miss matched hitting wrong keys and over geared on auto pilot. Strangely if you suggest a addon that helps them. Most agree to try.
Not as cool as a shield heavy melee (just cant see how ranged could properly work) mage tank that is an actual tank spec just as viable as other tank specs.
10% Chance to miss catching warglaive, resulting in 10% health dmg taken. Also just for more fun, if you are behind player said player is hit by glaive suffering a 5 second stun, affects allies and enemies.
A better option would be to increase group size to 6 with a 4th dps. No matter how many take specs they put in, people still won’t want to play that role. I don’t blame them. Tanking is pain and pugs make it unbearable.
Past few expantions have made it very difficult for people to have multiple alts that are well geared, legion with its artifact level and legendarys and bfa with neck powers and now cloaks. They need to add more roles to the pure dps classes.
For example: I mostly play a mage and a priest. I don’t enjoy dps on the priest and I can’t heal with a mage. So if I want to play my mage but we need a healer I have to switch characters and more importantly maintain multiple characters.
Druids have four specs. It makes sense to add a fourth spec to many of the classes so when we are short a role for a dungeon or raid it is easier for someone to switch roles without having to maintain multiples.
Rogues: classic evasion tank. We all remember the five man Gruul.
Hunter: Doesn’t really make sense for them to heal but could see some sort of eyes of the beast or pet merge to tank.
Mage: Tanking doesn’t make much sense, they are glass cannons in therory. However Chromie sets some precidence for them to heal. During the senario in warlords she healed using time magic. I could see a chorno mage heal but reversing time somehow.
Warlock: Could tank by again doing some kind of pet merge but since now demon hunters do that I think it would be fun if they did some sort of healer based off their life drains. Like drain life from enemies and channel into allies.
Shammy: Like others have said were originally off tanks. Give them a fourth spec as earth shammys and flesh this out.
Would this completle solve the whole lack of tanks and helaer? No, But it could help fill some of the shortages and would allow thoses that want it to fill more roles on their mains.
God please no.
Try playing all the tanks is extremely difficult content - it’s way more fun. Lolstomping through WQ level difficulty is lame and boring on all specs and classes, and new classes wont change this.
make the dps queue longer
- Increase the bonus satchel rewards for tanks
- Make it less punishing to focus on multiple specs/classes
- Increase the group size to 6, with 4 DPS
- Increase tank damage to open world mobs
- Reduce the “knowledge requirement” to complete M+ dungeons. No one should have to look up abilities for trash mobs on external websites.
All these are decent ideas. On the other hand, further increasing the number of tank specs is both way more work, and an outplayed idea that seemingly failed to increase tank population.
Adding new tanks won’t make any noticeable difference. People that like tanking already do so your not gonna get a sudden influx of tanks.
never said it would, but more dps spec would increase the dps queue.
I agree with this. I’ve said before, every class should have a tank spec and the OP gave several good ideas how they could be implemented…I for one would love a Hunter tanks spec to learn.
But I would also love to see a Shaman commune with the earth and similar to bear form, turn into a rock golem like The Thing from Fantastic Four.
