This game is in desperate need of more MMORPG competition

WoW has been around for a long time, and it has outlived many other MMORPGs in regards to having a player base. Other old ones might still be around to play, but are kind of dead. There have been ups and downs over the years, but you can’t argue that WoW is #1, and so many MMOs have attempted its formula and failed.

But for me, WoW has now become boring, and I am tired of their same game formula expansion after expansion. There are not regularly added new classes or races, they come every expansion or so (which is years+), and new dungeons and raids take a very long time to get implemented as well. For example, we are in dire need of more stuff to do now already. It’s hard to make an MMORPG and to regularly give the players content, I get that, but it is not impossible.

I feel like things would be better for WoW if there was ACTUAL competition that threatened their income. There is no doubt to me that they have gotten lazy and complacent because why should they care when no one can beat them right now. They would frequently start dishing out more new content to try and retain and get more players. Can you think of actual competition from other MMORPGS right now? All I can think of that are popular is Final Fantasy XIV and Black Desert Online.
Other contenders:

  • Elder Scrolls Online
  • Old School Runescape
  • Guild Wars 2
But even all of these are not even close to WoW population.

I guess I am just burned out with WoW, but I am sick of not having more frequent race and class additions, and no changes in the usual path for content. Because of that, I have taken up playing “dead” MMOs with some friends. For example, I tried out Rift for the first time, and it is really fun! The only shame is that barely anyone plays it. They have a necromancer class, something I wish more MMOs had. I am also looking to play the OG Guild Wars after Rift, then EverQuest 2 because they also have a fun necromancer class as well.

"Dead MMORPGs":

  • Maplestory
  • WildStar
  • EverQuest
  • City of Heroes
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Asheron’s Call
  • Lineage 2
  • Minions of Mirth
  • Club Penguin :frowning:
And the list could go on! It saddens me to think about this.

Some are gone forever, others are barely hanging on. They were once fun.

Is anyone else bored with WoW right now? There is literally nothing for me to do since I have leveled up my characters, professions, and gotten good enough gear. What MMOs do you find yourself falling back on or thinking about playing? I love finding new content like I did with Rift. And are you looking forward to any other MMOs?

It’s fascinating that so few MMOs are getting made these days. New World looks bad to me, and Ashes of Creation is a looong way from being done.

Oh boy, you just knocked over the can of worms there. That is one subject no one wants to touch in game. Any threat to gold with people in gold making you’re going to have quite an answer.

I’m about to be done with WoW after SL. Not because of boredom, but rather its formula; a lot of the things that keeps me entertained in other MMOs WoW doesn’t have. It could be the engine doesn’t support it, the change would be too much work, or no player interest in the feature at all. I don’t do much end-game content anymore so I focus more on the in-between stuff, so I look for MMOs that have those things. I actively play FFXIV since I’m paying for that one, but I also juggle between GW2, PSO2, BnS, and BDO casually on the side.

Regardless of what competition is out there and whether so-said games are better than WoW or not, MMO games aren’t something where people will just drop off and play something else. It could be sunk-cost fallacy, people being biased about eastern MMOs, or someone simply just enjoying themselves here. If they are enjoying WoW… unless they’re just willing to try something else for a little bit why would they leave this game entirely?

For that reason, an MMO’s income may not get threatened. MMOs that failed aren’t always because of competition; it may sometimes be because those games killed themselves. It could be anything from mismanagement to not listening to the player-base, to being too P2W, to a formula of their own that didn’t work out. Some examples:

  • Wildstar died over a combination of factors which include mismanagement and initially catering to the hardcore crowd. They never fully recovered even after going P2W.
  • Bless Online died because they prematurely released their game full of bugs, poor optimization, poor translation, and a convoluted talent system.
  • I know a couple of games that died because they changed for censorship

Personally, I’m looking forward to Ashes of Creation and Blue Protocol.

If MMOs are anything like a store’s retail sales, it isn’t always about the total amount of players the game has, but rather if the formula they’re using is gaining players in a given time-frame. In other words, a game could have tons of players and be stagnant in growth, versus a game with a small player-base but with exponential growth.

I’d seriously love a good MMO to get released to make WoW up it’s game. You don’t even need fancy graphics to much especially since WoW’s quite old even with the updates they did. Just good game play with a design for social interaction like how they setup the servers when WoW first started.

…hic!

EVE Online! EVE Online! EVE Online!

Give me spreadsheets! I need them! :chart_with_upwards_trend: :chart_with_downwards_trend: :chart_with_upwards_trend: :chart_with_downwards_trend:

I love SWTOR. They have all the story immersion and feeling of actually changing the world you are a part of that WoW has never had. Even though most of your decisions dont change the story dramatically, it at least feels like it does. WoW could really learn something from their character depth.

I also feel like community matters in this sense as well, like an MMORPGs community can make or break the game, and especially for new players that are checking it out. I do not feel like WoW is very good for new players. Like it might be easy to level and get gear, but a vast majority of the community is elitist now because the game is catering towards raiders.

It is a shame that so much of the game is just popping yourself into a queue now, and the same can be said with a lot of popular current MMOs. There is hardly a reason to be in a guild if you are not planning on being hardcore with PvE, and it is hard to find one that is casual and social that lasts long. WoW should really make some attempts to make guilds and socializing a bigger thing for people that want to, there is plenty for those that like the whole solo deal, and that is okay.

I played it when I was super young and still remember it. Crazy how some MMOs can leave a massive impact on you when you play them, nothing beats it when it comes to gaming.

It is surprising how some folks do not like to have discussions about such important ordeals, and get upset when anything about it is mentioned.

I am honestly about to join you on that, I do not have a sub and have been paying with in-game gold for months now. Game is sadly getting stale.

LOL, I have heard about that game, and how incredibly complex and hardcore it is. I get enough spreadsheets at work! I want to relax.

I will have to check it out then, I saw that it is on Steam, so I will add it to the list to check out.

Right on man. I hope your fantasy / rpg adventure flourish with your new choices. Fantasy to me has always been about the journey. The end sure… is wonderful, but the adventure is the game. Too bad many are skipping it these days, and misunderstanding why us geeks love fantasy so much. I truly feel they are missing out on the immersion. <3

I’m watching The Hobbit Extended Edition right now. LOTR universe is some of my favourite depth to fantasy, as it truly started where we are today. All the best of luck my friend! <3

meanwhile EVE Online… still fine and well. and is older than WoW.

If Ashes of Creation is half as good as it appears now, it will give WoW a good run for its money (and players).

I just look at a video on it ,if you have problems with flash effect that is not the game for people with sight disabilities. Hope they have a way to tone it down.

This game just released a new expansion a month or 2 ago. They are still putting out regular content for this dinosaur. They do a new progression server every year or so, and that usually is fun for a while.

That was a hard day, 1-31-17. I still imagine all my PCs are partying at the villa.

The Sleeper has awakened.

I remember when the elite guild on our server awoke the sleeper and it went zone to zone killing everyone online. I was in eastern common lands tunnel at the time wheeling and dealing. When that announcement came, the chaos ensued.

God I miss that game up through Planes of Power. It truly was the best gaming and community gaming experience I have ever had.

New world seems like a survival MMO to me so its different, I am more curious to see how much $$ Amazon is willing to toss at the LOTR MMO on their platform especially since they are also doing a LOTR series. I am also curious to see if the try to spin an MMO/RPG r/t Wheel of Time since they are also releasing that series.
