There is no way Ashkandi could be Lothar’s sword right? Considering lore wise he only had one mentioned weapon, the great royal sword of stormwind? Why would there be A L initials on Askhandi though? Is this still a conspiracy theory that has not been solved yet? Or could it be Nefarian wanted to just mock Lothar so he had his initials carved into the weapon? Or could it be a weapon from his youth? Maybe back when he was part of the brotherhood of the horse and he initialed it with his name? He went on an adventure and lost it and somehow Nefarian’s goons found it and turned it into a Draconian weapon? But somehow keeping his initial intact?
Nobody knows for sure and there are a number of theories. Most likely, I figure Ashkandi was one of his swords. Whereas Turalyon probably has the sword that was broken at the Battle of Blackrock Mountain.
Blizzard lore writers do I bet!
I remember when I had that kind of faith that the writers knew what they were doing.
Lothar’s sword was shattered by Doomhammer. My personal theory is that the Great Royal Sword (seen in Turalyon’s possession, Lightforged) is Lothar’s hilt, while Ashkandi (the blade in Nefarian’s possession) was forged from the shattered blade. Only thing I can’t explain is why Lothar’s initials are carved into Ashkandi if Turalyon has the hilt.
If one were to try to apply logic to it, Ashkandi comes across like a huge ceremonial two-hander, whereas the shattered sword from Blackrock (implied to be reforged and wielded by Turalyon now) was originally a one-hander used in tandem with a shield as during his duel with Doomhammer, and as further indicated by his memorial statue in the Burning Steppes.
So Ashkandi could be a blade of his “office,” while the broken sword would have been his go-to weapon on the battlefield (remember, as a knight in the Brotherhood of the Horse, gigantic two-handers aren’t exactly practical for swinging around when in the saddle.). Having the holder’s initials stylized on a weapon would be just the sort of thing one might expect to be done with ceremonial arms to commemorate one’s elevation in the ranks, while he wouldn’t necessarily bother with something that frivolous when it came to the practical sword he would most often carry into battle.
That said, he was typically described as having used a greatsword. And in Tides of Darkness, even his greatsword and shield at the same time. I feel like some sources noted he was a giant man, but can’t find it off-hand.
