People project their egos into this game. This goes for every aspect of the game. It’s an indicator that they don’t have much going on in life.
PUG group formation where your achievements are checked are the lowest barrier of entry for people to feel good about themselves via putting others down.
However, it extends to everything.
It’s not just in WoW, either. Most people’s opinions are programmed in via pop culture so that a manufactured emptiness can be filled with quick ego hits – feeling morally or intellectually superior to others, whether it’s strangers or people you know.
Propaganda by Bernays is a good place to start for context on this.

Do you feel, perhaps, that this anger at elitist communities and mythic dungeons could be a misplaced emotion? Perhaps the rage you truly feel is for someone else who did not give you approval?

anyway the usual applies. if you’re dps, there are dozens applying for a single key or raid. try making friends, it helps, or joining WME, or playing tank/healer.
The constant negativity from Mythic+ and raiding, even down to LFR, is the reason why I’m focusing on PvP this time around.
I still see some negativity when queuing for BGs or Ranked matches, but not anywhere near as bad.

I’ve been doing mostly Battleground Blitz for my ranked PvP stuff, maybe that’s the difference?
That and I didn’t do any PvP last expansion, so I don’t know how toxic it was.
I think RSS and M+ are perceived to be the quick way to season completion, and so people get mad when it is not. Like, once you hit 2k in either, you get a reward and then you’re done, unless you want to keep going and be THE BEST. Most folks just want the mount or fancy gear.
Solo Shuffle is frustrating because once you get stuck in a rating, you’re not getting out of it unless you do something drastically different or get lucky. One side could argue that maybe you belong in that rating, but the inverse is that your goal then becomes unattainable. You start to say “well I’m doing everything right” and then wonder why other people aren’t playing as hard as you / aren’t interrupting the right spells / aren’t using their CCs or CDs on cooldown, and so on. Maybe you switch specs, maybe you switch classes, thinking that the little extra competitive edge will let you get over the finish line. Maybe that works, but it probably doesn’t.
Mythic is just the same. People want KSM and that feels like winning the game, at least in that strain of content. They push keys as high as they can go and, whether they’re the great player or maybe got into a group with a great player, and somehow managed to do a +9 or something good. Not all players will think that every group from then on will be as great, but when you’ve overcome that difficult challenge and played with competent players, it can be tough to slow down a little and play with people who maybe don’t know that quazii’s plater profile is even a thing and they overlap or miss interrupts or completely ignore mechanics that make their healers eyes pop out of their heads. (This is my first expansion playing a healer and lemme tell you it is freaking HARD.)
Anyways, the game isn’t a cakewalk right now, and everyone is going to react to that differently. I think there is definitely some merit to what Sef said about ego, but I think its also valid to say that once a player is running, they don’t want to walk again. They’re looking for others who have had the shared experience of performing well, and while sometimes they may be open to helping others get there, they probably will try to reach their own goals first before opting to run with players who still need to learn or don’t have the credentials.
Here I was thinking this was gunna be a good ol rp drama thread. I miss those.
