Asked about rolling a monk for pvp on Reddit, someone said this : This underperform in pve. They are the worst performing melee on warcraft logs even lower then dks and feral druids. Staying above 40k dps is a challenge for your average player with a 440+ gear set.
They require the conflict and strife essence for raids and pvp and that is completed through rated rbg aand arena content which could take months to complete for players that cant consistently hit 1600.
In pvp they have decent damage and mobility but if your pugging arenas most healers would prefer a plate melee partner or a cloth caster.
In mythic+ they have decent burst and good aoe uptime for pulls but setting up a 5 stack spinning crane kick and keeping it at 5 isnt much fun. Their survivability cooldowns are very good and they have something for magic or physical situations.
Out in the world with mobility and a 430+ ilevel soloing most things feels great. You have speed with tigers lust and flying serpent kick along with rolls to get quests done rapidly and against basic mobs two and three shotting things feels good.
Personally I have a big problem with their transmog. Outside of the legion sets everything looks stupid. Ive been complimented on my transmog before from other people and they have said basically the same thing, they cant figure out any combinations they like either. I have about 3 sets I rotate between and basically have everything except mythic legion and any set that required gladiator. Its kind of sad when I look at all the stuff I like on my paladin, hunter, and warlock.8
The class is really punishing losing your buff for going out of turn in a rotation so getting a rotation helper or weak aura package though annoying would be really helpful.
I think why I dislike mine and look to transition to a rogue is they are a ramp class that pops cooldowns on jump but gets punished internally for rotational mistakes outside of mechanics. It seems like everyone can push buttons and make themselves better while monks need to build up stacks of hit combo and spinning crane kick to feel better.
It might sound like I really hate the class and its a bit of a love hate relationship. Ive gotten great gear and pve progression as well as gladiator on my monk playing both ww and mw but I just feel theyre mediocre as a whole. Mw arent sought after much in pve and in pvp they are outshined by druids and paladins. As a brewmaster they are the best tanks with the most complicated mitigation, if thats your thing. Ww is getting buffed but I havent heard of anything that makes me excited playing them in the next tier. If you decide to continue good luck.
