Thinking about classic have a question

So I am considering giving classic a run but have a few questions

1- can I start on a classic vanilla server only and then when I feel done doing things in it move the toon to a BC only server and so on and so on until I catch up ? You know then a lich king only server and keep moving the toon over ?

2- if the question to answer one is yes are there enough people on the vanilla only server to still clear all raids and such ?

3- originally they thought it would stop at lich king now they getting WOD set, do they plan to just going till they catch up to current day ?

4- do things in classic that let’s say are now removed from the game still exist in classic to get it ?

Currently the Classic Era (vanilla) realms do not connect with the Cataclysm realms, and there is no TBC or WotLK available at the moment.

So for Classic, your options are Vanilla Era, Vanilla Hardcore (which puts you into Era if you die), SoD, and Cataclysm.

I haven’t really played in a couple of weeks due to RL business, but there are plenty of players in Era. It’s not like the 2019 Megaservers, but I’d say the population feels more authentic to actual Vanilla servers back in the day. Still people raiding and rerolling.

In Era, Whitemane is currently the big PvP cluster, and Mankrik is the big PvE cluster. I don’t know what Whitemane’s faction balance is like, but last I saw Mankrik has considerably more Alliance than Horde (but it’s PvE so whatever). Grobulus is a smaller-population RPvP server.

As for how far the progression will go, I have no idea.

I’m not sure if there’s a specific item you’re thinking of, but pretty much every item/quest that was in Vanilla is there in Era.

What happen to BC and WOTLK ? They took down those servers ?

No, they continued on to cata today.

I just started on classic moving on from retail and will give you my take as a fresh level 41 rogue.

  • Leveling is fine, just like in vanilla 04-05.
  • People are very helpful. A random warrior saw me in badlands yesterday looking at a band of ogres and asked me “do you need some help with them?”. Amazing!
  • You don’t have 100s of people running arouns areas like in vanilla so that’s a twofold issue. 1. You don’t have to compete to kill things or for quest items. 2. You may not have help when you need it for hard quests and you may have to come back to it.
  • AH items are balanced. Meaning, a stack of herbs or low level greens arw not 50g a piece. Blues are expensive but rightly so, they are powerful compared to retail blues and vanilla greens.
  • Guilds want you. No, really, they want and need you. Think about it! Population is limited and slow to grow. Guilds want to grow so it’s a win win.
  • Everyone is really nice, specially in guildsso join one when u r ready!.
  • you will see gold selling ads or boosts. Report or ignore.
  • There are normal, gdkp and sr raids, and there are plenty of different guilds and people running raids so plenty of choices.

Great input it’s just a shame that after vanilla you can not do BC or WOTLK anymore

Not sure why they would release those then take them down unless I am misunderstanding

Rest assured, the rest of the playerbase doesn’t understand why they aren’t available either.

Vanilla was released and ran its course. When TBC was released, you had the option to stay in era or move into TBC and I think there was a paid clone service to have both. When WOTLK was released, it just took over the TBC realms and there were no more TBC realms. Then the same with Cata, no more wrath. So that’s how we got to where we are today

Makes you wonder who at blizzard makes these decisions and why are they still working there lol

Probably Holly Longdale who as far as I know is still there… and that probably goes back to the TLE model that SOE (where Longdale worked) used with EQ and is still used by the current owner in EQ/EQ2 apparently with success as they keep doing it even now.

Although numbers are so low in the Cata version that it does make you wondow how much more effort will go into that experiment.

Oh and I’m not a fan of the TLE model because in my mind you just end up back where you didn’t want to play anymore. In EQ and apparently EQ2 people like to start over and over and over thus the TLE works for some people.

I’m more of a fan of the “classic” model that a few other games used. I was playing classic DAoC up until all the clusters were merged into one and the classic ruleset went bye bye. Even though it wasn’t really “classic” as there were changes but it wasn’t TOA either. Although that doesn’t mean much if you never played Dark Age of Camelot.
