With as popular a request as necromancers have been over the years, and the advent of two midrange spellcasters (with DH’s getting a melee/casting hybrid option), and the Frost DK’s recent rework - I feel like there’s actually a decent chance they might.
It’s doubtful. The only reason DH got a new spec is because they wanted a spec to fit the new expansion, and because DH only had 2 specs
If they rework DK to be ranged it’ll alienate the players who like it as melee. And adding a new spec is very doubtful because DK already has 3
Also, just a personal rant; DHs new spec isn’t even original. It’s just stolen voidform to go along with their stolen meta. I swear that entire class is made from scraps
Still hoping. With their Clawing Shadows talent, Death Coils, and DoT’s, they’re already so close to being a hybrid melee/caster spec. And if we could get rid of wounds, I’d be ecstatic
My unholy Dk feels a lot like my demo lock to play, so I could see this. It seems like I send out my riders and minions more than I actually melee.
But I like unholy DK as it is and wouldn’t want an ‘official’ rework in this direction.
They almost can be played at range. Pick up clawing shadows and go for a pet and minion build. Boom, you’re a necromancer! If they increased the wounds you could generate without using festering strike it would function pretty well.
Yep. Blizzard on par for the course. First they did it with DH then they did it with Spiritborne in Diablo. No one wants a mindless damage spam class to showcase no talent dps. Its the worst class in the game.
You say this as if it never happened before.
coughSurvival Huntercough
The last time they reworked a spec to be a different range (Survival in Legion) it didn’t go over too well.
No.
It hasn’t ever been a serious request. The history of it is that it started off as a meme and then some folks didn’t realize that and have been pestering people for “Can we please have another DK-class to go with Unholy?”
Memes aren’t real. If you want to play a death knight, play a Death Knight. If you want to play a ranged pet-based spellcaster then you play Warlock. The things people are “requesting” already exists and have existed since respectively Vanilla and TBC.
Folks are just spamming “Necromancer” as the name of a class, without any forethought to it at all. There already exists what folks are asking for, which is why it is a meme, and why it just needs to die off already.
Unholy DK has a class identity as well as a specialization identity. Survival didn’t, and hunter was already severely limited in what they could do with their entire class being ranged since they had both a dedicated ranged specialization (Marksmanship) and a dedicated pet specialization (Beastmaster). Survival was the odd child that didn’t have an identity.
The changes to Survival are more reminiscent to why Outlaw rogues became a thing, since “Combat” lacked any kind of identity. The simple reality is that DK is in a good spot as it is right now and virtually every example folks are going to bring to try to argue that it isn’t, such as “gief us Warlocks… I mean Necromancers” and your example of “But they made that change with Survival”, is going to be ignoring vital context that makes these examples self-defeating.
DKs are in a good spot right now and don’t need an identity change.
Combat Rogue too.
I think its fine where it is. You can handle movement really well but need to melee to set up wounds and such.
Its not a popular request and unholy DK is fine.
I challenge anyone who think “Combat” didn’t require an identity change to try to have a serious conversation with themselves or another person describing two Combat in combat using Combat combat abilities.
Tbh I don’t remember what combat looked like. I just know that outlaw is just praying on rng at all times and we already deal with enough rng as is.
This is my point, which is why they needed to change things since Combat isn’t a specialization. Because this is a grammatically correct sentence if it is: “Two Combat in combat uses various Combat combat abilities to combat each Combat to figure out who is best at combat when playing Combat.”
(Yes, you can make this exponentially more silly the longer you want to talk about Combat combat and Combat non-combat abilities.)
Survival had a similar issue, whereas DK doesn’t. Whether you like Outlaw or not is kinda irrelevant, because you can still remember more about what an Outlaw rogue looks like and even if you have a misconception about the type of RNG Outlaw relies on (there’s not been any ‘praying to RNG’ since mid-or-late Legion IIRC), you still have a feeling towards it.
You aren’t obligated to like every class and every specialization. Regardless of whatever reason you want to provide.
We’ve seen a few sneak peaks at the rumored uhdk rework with the new UI screenshot blogs that have been dropping, as well as mentions of festering wounds being ‘of concern’ (every uhdk every could’ve told them this) to the class design team (mentioned in the same breadth as outlaw needing 87 weakauras) so I’d wager based on what I’m seeing, no, it’s going to either double down on minions, or coast back to being natively focused on diseases with an option to go into a more minion focused build or builds.
Either way, DK probably is never going to have a true mid-range spec, necromancer is covered and more by Unholy.
Demo lock having a necromancer skin is far more likely.
“Combat” was meaningless. I wouldn’t advocate for all the rng of Outlaw but the highwayman/pirate theme is at least an identity.
I mean this just lets you keep up dps while doing movements away from your target in aoe its like a paladin you can do quite a bit at mid range but one of your builders is tried to your melee crusader strikes
Mistweaver had a forked path for ranged and melee, doesnt it?
In BFA*, it required doing pvp to get an essence that made melee possible.
