They should have called the Maw Hell instead

I feel like nobody would complain about it being hard and would actually be excited to fight stuff there if it was. Imagine saying that you’re venturing into Hell itself. I know the Maw is basically Hell already but calling it something else feels less epic and confuses people with the difficulty

The Maw is generic and cannot be associated with any specific real world religion.

On the other hand, not all real world religions believe in Hell so it is less of a generic term.

Meh? Not all real world religions have gods, but no one loses their mind over that term being thrown around.

That said, the Maw was Diablo enough as is it without directly lifting the term.

yup, I know some people on these forums and in game would have personal issues about it. The Maw sounds better though, in my opinion.

The Wastes…

The Void… (Yes, issues, however imagine the STORY otions…)

The Vast…

The Chasm…

All those terms can also be used to describe my ex-wife

That’s a her issue.

I don’t really think the terminology was an issue. It was just executed poorly.

Now here’s some truth.

“Hey, let’s put Zovaal’s motivations in a book that will never release!”

“… Um, why are subs down? … Oh, the quests don’t explain why Zovaal is such a douche…”

Maw walker do this
Maw walker do that
Blah blah blah
And to rub it even more there is notitle "maw walker "

I reckon even if everything stayed the same if you just called it Hell in the official game it would have been more popular. Like as just any other zone, the difficulty and the eye mechanic were just annoying. There’s no expectation of suffering and fighting just to survive in a place with a generic name like the Maw imo. But keep everything the same with the expectation of being sent to Hell and it’s so much cooler. Imagine being called a Hellstrider instead of a Maw Walker. Now THAT’S a title

I just wish ‘the maw’ was less… generic ‘evil bad place’. It’s so boring and just mostly ‘dark spikes, lava, and pitfalls everywhere’. It feels very uninspired. I can’t take it seriously, and it’s definitely not coming off as ‘threatening’ artistically so they tried to compensate with in-game mechanics that were instead just annoying or make things take longer.

Though I will add, the fact that Worgen and druids could originally essentially ‘mount’ in the maw showed Paws > Maws.

Yeah, it sounds pretty cool.

They needed to have made the maw legit dangerous though. Like, the land itself should have been an enemy.

I expect folks would have complained had they ramped the difficulty up too much though.

Hellwalker sounds a hell of a lot more badass than Maw walker tbqhwyf

I would’ve loved it, but then I would’ve wanted to work with Zovaal, as I’m a Satanist IRL.

It also ties into the lore because Uther says to Arthas “I sincerely hope there’s a special place in hell for you, boy.”

IRL != WoW

And, for the record, the pretender that everyone thinks is Satan is not the soul that is the one people intend to intone.

The name reminded me of the abyss, which reminded me Nietzsche, which reminded me that the snippets people quote don’t do the hell of reading his books justice.
