They aren't better than you

They just have more addons.

And, if you’d like a success story - I went and raided Mythic Antorus without any addons. :3 There’s always a way to improve - and addons make it easier!!! This isn’t anti-addons btw - like goodness go for them!!! I just have like…idk I like WoW’s base UI. Go for stuff that makes this game easier and have some fun! <3

I’m offended by that! I do not use a single fishing add-on!

Meh, I have 58.

That’s down from what I had before.

That new UI is looking like a bad Unity project. I may finally install a frames addon.

I think people who haven’t used addons have some warped perceptions as to what they do.

Especially in the context of PvE where content is designed around people playing with them.

I’m tired of this statement. I do just fine in content without addons. You don’t need something screaming at you to use your eyes and ears.

I feel like a better statement would be, “Addons improve non-sobriety gameplay.”

You mean your add-ons don’t automatically do your rotation and move you out of bad?

What?

I’m sorry, but how does this pertain to what I said?

Addons don’t play the game for you. They’re just a way of organizing information. Even with all the addons in the world with all the information at your fingertips, it’s still possible to make bad decisions. Either in terms of your rotation or in your decision-making in response to the information the addons give you.

Better players tend to use addons more, not because they rely on them, but because they’re trying to set up their information supply line in a specific way. Frequently that means customizing their addons to their own needs rather than using the out-of-the-box configuration.

Is it possible to play as well as an addon-user without addons? Yes absolutely. All of the information addons give you can be gleaned through in-game means. If you’re able to parse that information efficiently with the default UI then you’ll do just fine. However no addon will automate play for you (no addon that follows TOS anyway). So no, your lack of addons is not the reason you’re bad and the longer you use that as an excuse the longer your play will go unexamined and the longer your growth will stagnate.

Aren’t there addons that literally show you what button to press?

Kind of yes but rotation helpers are a noob trap. They can’t adjust the rotation of for instance you need to hold a cooldown for a particular section or if mechanics force you to deviate from the rotation, if you need to use your utility, where and when you should move, when and which defensives to use… etc. Using a rotation helper hard caps your skill ceiling at the level of the rotation helper and it’s impossible to grow beyond it. Even worse, if you do try to adjust your decisions based on the situation, the rotation helper eats up extra mental bandwidth, the opposite of its job, as now whenever the rotation helper tells you an ability, you have to decide if now is a good time to actually listen to it. Something you can only do if you actually know your spec rotation.

Rotation helpers don’t teach you your class, they teach you to play whack a mole and they stunt your growth. It’s better to simply cut out the middle man and learn the ins and outs of your spec on your own. Rotation helpers are not a substitute for actual knowledge and even worse are detrimental if you want to grow beyond them. Being a skilled raider is more than just knowing what your base damage rotation looks like, otherwise anyone with access to wowhead or icy veins would have CE.

I’m a mythic raider too…

just 4 expansions late

The people that say they never use any add on for anything, always tend to not be doing “challenging” content.

Yeah, I can also raid LFR with no add ons and do fine.

I can do m+5 and do ok with no add ons.

I have no doubt that they are indeed better than me.

Jokes on you, I’m a firm believer in no addons.

Must suck to suck nerd

If the addons improve their performance, then they are objectively better than you.

But addons don’t magically improve performance. That usually takes experience, practice and gear acquisition.

One thing that has very dubious results in improving oneself is making excuses and blaming everything but yourself.

This argument is like saying it’s the Steinway that makes a concert pianist, not the 20k hours of practice.

Look. If I had a steinway I could be a concert pianist. I have the ability.

Its just that I have a job. And I dont even want a steinway.

But if I had one. I could totally do it. So just assume I am good enough. Kthx.

Addons are tools, and nothing more. Sure, you could gnaw the lug nuts off with your teeth when changing a flat tire if you want to show off how hardcore you are to strangers, but evolved apes know that’s what tire irons are for.

It is the reason they are bad. They play bad because they dont have the information they need. They are bad players because they refuse to look at the information that is easy to get to improve.

I had someone in my guild get carried for multiple expansion, then we had to kick her and her husband out for progression when we were going through mythic, she was absolutely livid. She went to the raid leader, she wasnt using a DPS meter or looking at logs. We went over the DPS logs with her, showed her wow analyzer and her DPS drastically improved.
