I’ll wager Blizzard doesn’t remove depletes because they don’t want people farming the same 10 key when they miss the timer.
I’d say remove depletions, but the key changes to a different dungeon if you fail it.
Might as well remove keys at that point. People will zone in/ out just to reroll key.

No key depletion starts the slippery slope.
Ex: Guy gets a 10 key he’s way undergeared for due to getting lucky with LFG’s, proceeds to recruit people who are then basically held hostage in this extremely long and painful +10 key. If they leave the guy will cry on the forums about leavers and how swifter punishments should be added for such behavior.
This played out with heroic dungeons and casuals crying to have a leaver penalty and look what happened. Now it’s a ghost town.

Report them. If they do it enough they WILL get a punishment. Sorry about your key.

Maybe he just received word that for $1200, he could join the beta for Ashes of Creation in 2029 and was too excited to continue the key.
I am pretty sure nobody will ban if you leave a key which goes badly, because someone does not pull their weight.
My definition of “goes badly” is that, the key is going to be overtime and there is a lot left to do. Like I dont think leaving make sense if you are on the last boss and you have just depleted it because of a wipe, but it makes perfect sense if you are on the 2nd boss boss and the timer already looks dead.
On the forum, ppl will tell the same thing, but its anyway actually. Its up to blizzard to decide what is punishable, not to the forum and based on their past actions, the above is not, what happened with the op however is (if it is not a single occasion).
Btw this is also why it would be important to make ppl actually set their goals (Beat timer, competition, learning). This would ensure, everyone is on the same page from start.
