Eighty nine?! Wow, that is a lot of servers. Surely they won’t have that many for the new Classic. Based on all my research in this thread, Ion’s Q&As, and elsewhere, it puts the number firmly at 10+.
Well, if you want to go letter of the tweet,
“just as the 2004 launch did” means 89 servers and Europe is going to have to wait 3 months.
Regardless of how many you think, we know there will be at least 5 per region.
Nope, at least 13 per region actually. Read the tweets.
“Well, you could have 50, but since we only provided 3 servers… nah nah”
“But it doesn’t matter, because to have only 3 servers we also had to do permanent sharding and now all of 5 people play.”
Fixed that for you.
I’m sorry I’m about to do this to you…
SICK UM
You’re clearly not from OCE.

I’d actually like to see a server list as lean as possible, if there’s only a single RP server for instance I’d be perfectly okay with that, because it’ll be guaranteed to have a healthy population.
The fewer servers the better, server diffusion is why we got LFD and a lot of other things people complain about in the modern game, they’ve nearly all been created as an alternative to the obvious solution, server mergers.
Without a healthy population a classic server will die. I really hope they don’t go ham and make dozens of them, I mean I want the game to succeed but I’d rather see a few server crashes followed by some transfers out the gate and new additions as needed than the lopsided faction/critically low population servers we see now as a direct result of too many servers and lack of meaningful mergers (such as, say, taking a realm that’s all one faction and merging it with one that’s all the opposite). They have the data but for some reason won’t act appropriately, Classic is their chance to not screw up twice.
While I do agree with your sentiment, I also want Vanilla player caps, though I don’t mind going above that a bit. And if you have player caps similar to Vanilla, you’re going to need more than just a handful of servers. 20-30 should do nicely for a start, but I’m just pointing out based on the information we have right now, we can assume there will be at least 5 per region.
I agree to an extent. Fewer the better… to a certain extent.
Like if there are 5 million people who are playing classic a year from now, there needs to be more than 5 servers. Otherwise other bad things creep in.
If more servers are needed, add them. Just don’t start off with too many then do nothing about it later, is all I’m really saying.
They need to have caps that are around the 10-15k for the starter zones (with sharding of 200-500 per shard), then 5k for the 20 zones (no sharding except maybe Barrens depending on server infrastructure) then 2.5k for the 30+ zones. That way as the tourists die off realising they haven’t even got to level 10 after the first 12 hours, the numbers will die off without having a low population at the end.
If they’re seeing too many people get to level 20 than what they expected, add more servers and redirect new players, as early as possible.
My thought. 5 is not going to cut it imo.
It’s hard to gauge off the demo, because the majority of people paying for the Virtual Ticket won’t be those loving Classic.
You trying to be funny?
Oce is not “niche”.
We have thousands, easily ten+thousand
players ready to play classic right now.
Try fit that in 1 server let alone 0, you deluded racist!
Try fit that in 1 server
Lightshope fit tens of thousands in a single server.
I just hope there isn’t too many servers so it doesn’t feel like a dead game when all the retail players quit.

“If there are only 5 servers” then tens of thousands are nothing compared to millions… Sheesh, keep it in perspective.

I’m an Australian, you numpty.
