There must always be a lich king, so is Arthas just incompetent?

Without a Lich King, the undead will overrun the world. But with Arthas in charge and actively trying to conquer the world, he was pushed back to Northrend in a few weeks. Is Arthas just a loser then?

Yes Arthas is a loser. He was easily tricked into becoming the lich king and then had a stupid plan once he was that ended with him getting killed.

The lore is he was purposely holding the scourge back. Conflicted emotions of his human and lich selves.

You do not know the lore at all…

The idea was that Arthas’ last bit of humanity was holding them back from just running rampant all over the world, and then Bovlar did the same thing.

Though they’ve destroyed the helm and it’s going to be little more than a weak zombie invasion in a few cities that we beat in a week or two.

So maybe the Scourge just isn’t that big a threat anymore.

No he literally single handily saved Lordaeron. He fought off Ner’Zuls influence in the helm. Which is why Bolvar didn’t go mad. He retreated all the scourge to Northrend to protect Azeroth. If he wanted to take over he could of as soon as he revived Kel’thuzad from the sunwell. He killed 90% of the elves all of northern Lordaeron he could have marched south and taken everything over. He didn’t.

There must always be a Lich King, so handfuls of weak ghouls won’t wander around cities, not affecting the locals in any way whatsoever.

His remaining Soul fragment had been holding back the Scourge and when his Body shoved the Soul fragment into Frostmourne it decided to lure Azeroth’s champions to Northrend so that it could test them.

The now Soulless Body of course was so focused on testing the Champions of Azeroth he kept his Scourge in Duskwood and Razorfen Downs from leaving until he was sure of his acquisitions.

Tyrian Fordring of course broke Frostmourne bringing about the Lich King’s demise before the Scourge in Razorfen Downs, Ghostlands and Duskwood could destroy Stormwind, Theramore, Thunder Bluff and Orgrimmar(especially with us all the way in Northrend).

He killed off that part when he cut out his heart.

To put it simply: With a Lich King, the Scourge is an army. Without a Lich King, the Scourge is a disease.

A Lich King has plans, a Lich King has goals. A Lich King needs to keep part of his army close so they can protect him. Other parts need to be stationed on strategic locations needed for his plans to work. These things make the Scourge less dangerous.

Without a Lich King, the mindless Undead out of control would swarm the world, unpredictable and unstoppable. There’s no leader you can kill to stop the invasion. There’s no strategic location you can take to stop their plans. There’s no logic behind the attacks you can predict. They can’t be reasoned with. They will just infect anything until they infect everything.
