I’m all for giving Blizzard crap when it’s warranted, but for the love of Gaben, please stop spamming Blizzard like a bunch of kids that have no idea how servers work. They’re obviously working on it.
Thanks.

The DDoS attacks will continue until the unfaithful start believing in our lord and savior.
Hail Gaben.
Mouth foaming zealotry engaged GABEN WILLS IT!
For the Summer Sale!
Actually… there is… it’s “black holing” problem is their ISPs need it as well. And it takes a special box running BGP with your BGRs.
It’s not exactly a quick fix, even granting that.
Hail Gaben
I build and admin websites and forums like this one for a living.
Ive talked to top security techs at a few different hosting companies and they all will finally break down and admit it when pressured that ultimately if someone WANTS to hack something and is determined enough, they WiLL inevitably hack it.
Damage control after the fact is about all Blizzard can do.
I’m in the tech field, but security isn’t my thing, so feel free to correct if I’m wrong.
From what I know, there’s not really lot you can really do to quickly stop a DDOS attack, especially if a lot of money is being put into it.
It’s basically a money-based “buy more” war on both sides that heavily favors the attack in terms of value.
No, there is no way to absolutely prevent it from happening.
If someone wants in bad enough and is talented enough they WILL get in.
I had a hack one time that literally appeared in the logs as if someone had hacked from INSIDE the system…ie one of the companies techs themselves.
People who know how to do it can figure it out.
Totally agree with you Wuzeh. I am sure they are doing the best they can. But trying to inject logic into a crucible filled with rage, tears, and mobs of psychology though will most likely result in a fireworks. Lets be honest. Forums the Postmaker, will have his due one way or another.
I was under the impression there were services out there that even a mediocre hacker could pay for to buy a few thousand drones.
GD right now:
People with no clue on how networking functions talking/complaining like they do, and people who do understand networking telling them to shut up.
its a vicious cycle of sifting through data packets, finding where they are coming from, tracing back thru like 100 different proxy servers they used to hide their tracks, then getting the FBI involved, and someone going to prison for 5 to 10 years. just like lizard squad back in 2015.
I wish the forum rules were less strict, I’d love to be more insulting to these people.
Facebook already pinned him down, can’t be that good. At least Lizard Squad was (seemingly) talented.
i think people just dont know what a DDoS actually is. its not a magical anti working machine, It’s called a “distributed denial of service” it takes advantage of systems hardcoded into windows and linux’s backend that cannot be removed without doing a major overhaul of the entire backend network system.
my very basic understanding is the most common form is flooding the server with the question windows and linux are both hardcoded to answer “what time is it?” they do this millions or billions of times per second from thousands of computers essentially overflowing the network hub with traffic. you cant simply stop it unless you disconnect the network and hope the attackers gets bored.
only thing we can do is wait till the idiot gets bored of showing off.
I personally dont know anything about hacking. I just go by what the techs have said when I talk to them.
Initially they were blaming something else, but I had already reverse tracerouted the IP address of the hacker to Lima Peru.
When the tech understood that Id already checked, he admitted that it was a hack and that they had no idea what was actually happening (at that point, anyway).
He said from his end it appeared as if the hack had been carried out inside their own system, but he knew all the techs and knew they werent the sort to risk jobs and prison time just to hack my little joke server.
He was the first one to admit …well, when pressed that is…that at the end of the day they can only TRY to stop the hacking, including a DOS attack. They cant guarantee it.
Given that HUGE websites like amazon and yahoo cant even stop it, I doubt that Blizzard is going to fare much better.
I think that’s one type of attack, but I believe the most common form is basically flooding servers with traffic, aforementioned services utilizing thousands of AIs for a fraction of what it costs to run a server.
Honestly, I used to know the specifics but it kinda fell off with time, I don’t think it even involves hacking in most cases.
omg yeah.
I had them hitting ONE image file on my server a few years ago.
They literally had like many thousands of requests per second eating up my bandwidth so it I couldnt even get my websites to load without timing out.
I finally had to block IP’s from entire countries to get it stopped.
