There is something wrong with the RNG in this game

Get rid of RNG completely.
Start giving a token (or type thing) as reward.
Have a vendor that redeems above mentioned token for gear item of your choice.

Solved.

As a for profit company, their goal is to keep people paying a subscription for as long as possible. Deterministic loot is counter to that, and probably why they use it so sparingly.

It seems to work like this: what item you get is RNG-determined, but once that item is chosen, then it “clusters” (repeated drops of same item), until RNG determines the next item to be clustered.

true but irrelevant.

it’s close enough to “true rng” that you’d never know the difference.

RNG is one factor in what is probably a complex formula for loot distribution. There are many possible different ways they could construct such a formula.

here’s the really simple explanation for everyone.

RNG = random number generator/generation. RNG is simply a way of generating a ‘random’ number in the computer. yes, it’s not ‘truly’ random. it doesn’t matter. you can’t predict it. there’s no reason to suspect blizzard would create their own custom RNG function vs using one that already exists.

the part most of you are complaining about is the algorithm used to interpret the RNG output. well of course the algorithm isn’t random. how could it be? there’s no natural way to say “the number 6 means bracers with leech on them”. that’s a decision made by developers, as it must be.

so if you hate the algorithm, fine, say that. don’t suggest that your bad luck is a natural result of computer rng not being ‘true random’. it’s unrelated.

People who say “it’s all RNG” conveniently ignore the fact that drop rate for different items is not RNG at all. For instance, levelers in BfA dungeons cannot get azerite items to drop, because they cannot get them until they reach level 50 and get a neck. These items were not substituted on the loot table by non-azerite gear, so there are bosses that, although there is supposedly loot listed for them, will never drop loot for certain specs. That’s a hidden confounding factor.

Also, there is such a thing as dynamic rng. In a game (not suggesting this one), the chance of a highly desirable drop might be affected by some formula they have developed that allows them to keep players playing longer to farm it, then drops the item just before they are likely to quit.

We’ve certainly had bad luck protection before, where the probability of the drop rate of an item increases to a certain threshold, whereupon it drops on the next opportunity.

In any case, when people keep complaining about always getting the same slot - even on their alts - or as in Shadowlands, “Why does my weekly box of disappointment only offer me items for my legendary slot or the one item that doesn’t need an upgrade?” this suggests that it might be a thing. Perhaps someone could write an addon to track these things to get true data.

Could they write code that is the opposite of bad luck protection? Yes, they could. And no one would ever know.

oh it’s definitely a thing. people here don’t understand that their sample size is not remotely big enough to make statements about rng being rigged or whatever.

Every time I’ve become upset enough at RNG to start gathering data, the results were completely ordinary and within expected variance. Alas, selective memory and anecdotes of the extremes generate a lot of superstitions,

Then every so often there’s some line in the patch notes like “fixed a bug that could prevent rare mount from dropping from X” that just inflames my paranoia anew.

When you consider there are 400-500 xmogs of every other slot … and like 1500 for capes …

… I don’t think you realize how PROBABLE it is that you get more capes as loot.

That was the first thing that hit me when I started collecting xmog: why the fluff are there SO MANY CAPES???

RNG isnt ‘random’ at all in WoW.

Run an old raid with one character. You’ll get X amount of usuable drops.
Now dual box the same raid covering two armor types. You will get about the same amount of usuable drops.
Add a third armor type and watch and see what happens. A bulk of drops will now be that ONE armor type you cant use. lol.

Game literally tries to keep you from getting what you need.

I suspect whatever causes that in old content is the same type of thing theyre doing in current

that sounds like conspiracy-theory thinking

LITERALLY just laid out IN DETAIL what i did and what I saw.

yes, i read it. and your one single anecdote doesn’t prove the system is rigged.

yeah…youre not wasting my time with trolling son…
perma blocked.
call someone else a liar, son

For those who CAN handle reality, I did this over WEEKS and it was ALWAYS the same results lmao

My main annoyance as well as rings.

Anyways my ‘guess’ on why so many capes is because the majority of time you play, that is the main visual you get from your characters.

Likely because cloth, leather, mail and plate wearers can all use all the cloaks, so any set made that includes a cloak (and isn’t a class-limited tier set) will give everyone a cloak. Whereas helms, boots, etc hide 3/4 of what’s out there when you look at your collection.

Yes. I did keys back to back. And I got the same exact piece on one of my toons over and over and over again. Same slot. Just different variations of it and the worst part, I needed other gear.

You don’t ever have this problem if you are a Twitch streamer though… Blizzard makes sure ultra rare mounts and legendaries fall into your lap when you are one.
