You can buy anything from the Shop using gold only and not having to spend a single penny. Just like buying things from an in-game vendor.
It makes no difference if x mount costs 500k gold on a vendor or having to spend 500k gold on two tokens to buy x mount off the Shop.
You do NOT have to spend any real money to buy something off the Shop if you don’t want to!
The only difference is you can “take a shortcut” with real money if you want a Shop cosmetic, but even then, you could still do the same thing by buying a cash WoW token and selling it for gold on the AH to spend at a vendor.
There is no fundamental difference between cosmetics being on a vendor for gold and on the Shop. None. The Anti-Shop crowd need to understand this very basic fact and quit shooting down the Shop at every chance they get. The Shop needs to be expanded so we have more options and the negativity is not helping!
FF14 has a lot of stuff on the store. The BIG difference is you can’t use in-game Gil to buy FF14 shop stuff, whereas you can use WoW gold to buy stuff off the WoW Shop.
My point is I don’t want all the good transmog sets and mounts (for example) to be on the store, which is what could happen if they keep expanding on it.
I think the occasional transmog, mount or pet is better.
There is of course neat transmogs and mounts in the store, but the game provides way too many great options just by doing all the content available! Even the oldest trials and raids have some really cool looking stuff!
But, as mentioned above, real currency only. You don’t have the option to use in game currency as you do in WoW.
If Blizzard were to put a cosmetic on an in-game vendor for say, 200k, you can just farm that 200k by doing in-game activities. Yeah, you can buy a token and sell it for gold, but you don’t have to do that. It can all be done in-game.
If they put that same cosmetic in the store for 15 dollars, now you either have to buy a token with gold to convert to balance, which there is indeed fundamentally no difference for you, or you can just buy it with your credit card. Blizzard makes money either way.
Whether you’re buying a token with gold, that someone had to buy with 20 dollars, to sell to you, so you can convert to balance, or you just up and buy it with your own money, Blizzard is making money. They potentially make less money if it were just in the game from the start.
If the shop and tokens keeps our sub price from increasing, I’m all for it. I’ve seen subscription services like Netflix, HBO, Prime and Youtube TV increase in price multiple times since their launch.
I love this game but not way am I going to pay $25/month for it.
