Theoretically, how good could AI become in WoW if there were no restrictions?

Food for thought.

For Player Characters:

  • Perfect Rotations and Resource Management: An unrestricted AI could analyze every combat situation in real-time, factoring in procs, cooldowns (both yours and the enemy’s), buffs, debuffs, positioning, and even minute latency fluctuations to execute absolutely perfect rotations. This would go far beyond current add-ons, adapting dynamically to every micro-change in the encounter.
  • Optimal Movement and Positioning: AI could navigate environments flawlessly, dodging every telegraphed attack, maintaining perfect distances for maximum damage or healing, and utilizing terrain to its advantage in ways that human players often struggle with.
  • Flawless Target Prioritization and Switching: In complex multi-target encounters, AI could instantly identify the highest priority targets based on threat, cast sequences, and raid strategy, switching targets with inhuman speed and accuracy.
  • Predictive and Reactive Abilities: An advanced AI could learn enemy attack patterns and proactively use defensive cooldowns or interrupts with perfect timing, anticipating threats before they even fully materialize.
  • Adaptive Learning and Strategy: Over time, an AI could analyze vast amounts of combat data to identify subtle advantages, discover new optimal strategies, and even adapt its playstyle based on the specific raid group composition and the encounter’s progression.
  • Seamless Integration with Game Mechanics: Without restrictions, AI could potentially interact with the game’s UI and systems in ways that human players cannot, leading to more efficient inventory management, quest completion, and even social interactions (though the latter raises ethical questions).

For Non-Player Characters (NPCs):

  • Truly Dynamic and Believable Behavior: AI could power NPCs with complex motivations, personalities, and routines that evolve based on player interactions and the game world’s state. Imagine NPCs forming genuine relationships, reacting realistically to events, and having their own goals and agendas.
  • Intelligent and Adaptive Enemies: Combat with AI-driven enemies could become incredibly challenging and engaging. Bosses could learn from player strategies in real-time, adapt their tactics, and even coordinate with other enemies in sophisticated ways. Imagine raid bosses that feel genuinely intelligent and unpredictable.
  • Living Ecosystems: AI could drive complex simulations of wildlife and environments, with creatures behaving according to realistic ecological principles, hunting patterns, and interactions.
  • Personalized and Reactive Storytelling: AI could analyze player choices and actions to create truly dynamic and personalized questlines and narratives that adapt to the individual player’s journey.

Potential Issues and Considerations (Why Restrictions Exist):

  • Erosion of Skill and Player Agency: If AI could play the game perfectly, it would significantly diminish the sense of accomplishment and skill progression for human players. Why learn a complex rotation if an AI can do it flawlessly?
  • Unfair Advantages and Competitive Imbalance: In PvP, players using unrestricted AI would have an insurmountable advantage over those playing manually.
  • Ethical Concerns and the “Spirit” of the Game: Many argue that the core of playing a game like WoW lies in the human element – the learning, the mistakes, the coordination, and the sense of personal achievement. Widespread, unrestricted AI could fundamentally alter this spirit.
  • Development Complexity and Resource Intensity: Creating truly advanced and unrestricted AI for a game as complex as WoW would be an enormous technical undertaking.
  • Potential for Exploitation: Unrestricted AI could potentially be used to exploit game systems in unforeseen ways, disrupting the game’s economy and balance.

In conclusion, without any restrictions, AI in WoW could reach a level of proficiency far exceeding human capabilities in virtually every aspect of the game. While this could lead to incredibly dynamic and challenging experiences in some areas (like interacting with intelligent NPCs), it would likely come at the cost of player skill, agency, and the fundamental nature of the game as a human-driven experience. This is precisely why Blizzard and other game developers implement restrictions on automation and are proceeding cautiously with any form of AI integration.

AI barfed this out so it’s not worth human time or consideration, either in text or concept.

So you just want bots to fight bots? No RP, no trading, no helping new players. Sound like you don’t want people playing WoW at all.

You know it’s not Sunday, right? Wrong time of the week to be posting a troll post.

In theory based on what I know of AI models, it would ouroboros itself in the end.

Which, again, re-enforces my belief that humans are too immature to use AI properly

Bots were created last expansion that we’re playing by themselves in high rated arenas. Venriki and Supatease both ran into bots using AI to win games.

I love bots and would play with them more if they expand follower dungeon/comp stomp to other stuff
