I’m thinking about what job to level next. The choices are ninja, monk or dark knight. I kind of feel like tanking for a bit.
And on that note: can I just leave a shout out to the fact that the FFXIV seems much more welcoming than the overall WoW community? WRA and MG server forums might be an exception to this, but god - the wider Classic and Retail community seem like such a mess in comparison. I literally just got called a “f-word entitled b-word” for pointing out that $35 per character clone - and consequently $350 for an entire server - might be a tad overpriced…

DRK was written by the woman who did all of the Shadowbringers MSQ and is widely considered one of the best job questlines in the game. Highly recommend it, but she also did ROG, afaik so either way you should be good.
MNK is fun to play but the quests are kind of eh. Definitely one of the bigger-brain classes though.

You can play the free trial up to level 60, which includes the acclaimed first expansion Heavensward!
That means almost everything is open to try out. You can level all your jobs to 60 for free if you want. You just can’t, uh, do some stuff with FCs and sell on the market board really. After that, just buy the FFXIV Complete Edition, and that will bring you all the way up through Shadowbringers.
Just be aware that whatever method you use to purchase it will be locked forever. So, if you buy it through Steam, you can only buy expansions through Steam and vice versa. Most say buy it directly in case there are non-Steam sales, but I haven’t really felt like I’ve missed out.

I know people have said this elsewhere, but I think it bears repeating if you’re going to give it a go.
It really helped me to look at FFXIV as another Final Fantasy game and not another MMO. I don’t know if that will help you, but it made the changes a lot easier to digest for myself. It’s just a Final Fantasy game you can play with friends.

I will admit the combat feels a bit… chewy. And I’m still frightened of trying to cram so many buttons into my brain (I’m barely making RDM work and at a sub optimal level for sure). But the… literally everything else about the game is so wonderful it’s worth the hassle.

Also despite popular belief the real end-game in FF14 isn’t raiding or pvp.
It’s fashion. And if for anything else, the best kind of endgame.

Ginormous. You can log into Ul’dah on Balmung and it’s all over the city. There are subset RP communities that are region-specific that are smaller, but the RP community is thriving and shows absolutely no signs of getting any smaller.

As someone who’s never played another final fantasy this was by far my biggest hurdle. I’m going through the initial (1-50 I think?) MSQs again because the first time around I got bored and just skipped through everything, then Square did something super ballsy that caught me off guard but I felt nothing because I skipped all the character building. Got back to that point again and it doesn’t quite have the punch I imagine it’s supposed to because I know what’s coming, but it’s far more than I’ve ever felt playing wow.

there’s a thing that people bring up about the endgame and that’s the fact that the only real thing that’s gated are gear from the latest raids and the latest tomestones, everything else is grindable
which is nice BUT
if you got brainrot like me you’ll find yourself doing almost a hundred FATEs in one night trying to get memories for the latest round of relic weapons doing it hyper-efficient on blue mage hitting literally two buttons ad nauseum
plan your grinds accordingly people
