Little late to the thread, but this is my first week giving it a shot. Been playing a trial during slow and off times at work. Seems okay thus far, but I admit it’s difficult to get fully engaged with. Likely has to do with that lingering “sunk cost” feeling from WoW and committing to a whole new MMO.

I made a Sea Wolves Roegadyn Pugilist. Seems fun thus far! Admittedly, I’m not too drawn to any of the races, but the community seems strong and I’ve got a lot of friends here on Mateus. Here’s hoping it sticks… even if I will miss my pandas.

Been playing it on and off for years and was considering getting back into it to finaly finish the main story-line of the current expansion.

I personally find FF14 to be a better game to facilitate roleplayers than WoW. It really doubles down on the whole play your way—build your character type of experience. And they really want you to invest in your character since one toon can switch to any class and making alts is cumbersome. I find the game play in WoW worlds better especially in PvP but they’re catering to two different demographics of players at that point.

The RP community is really active but if you were looking for any sort of continuity with lore or characters—forget it. There’s lore there but it’s thin and I’ve seen the vast majority of players just jump into their anime power fantasy—which is fine for a game like ff14-- than something to the same “lore abiding” standards you’ll find on WoW or WrA.

That said, here’s pics of my Cat Girl Sand Ninja

ARR is still very much a slog starting out. Heavensward is where it really starts to take off, so if you can stick it out until then it does get much more interesting.

I’d also strongly suggest doing side-raids as well, considering they have their own OST for each boss fight.

The interview with Alex, Husky, and Soken was great. Alex living his dream and Soken really seemed to be interested in talking to them. He took a lot of time to watch their videos and knew a ton about their music. Love how much the devs actually care about the community

how long until someone angrily enters the thread to tell everyone to shut up about a non-WoW game

the most dangerous primal is the forum poster telling everyone to stop enjoying another game, for sure

I kinda burned out on FFXIV swiftly, but having come back to WoW for a bit I wonder if that’s not simply because I ridiculously overleveled (Level 30 and I’ve only just met the world’s Super Best Friends) and rewards started aggressively drying up (Most FATEs I’m even overleveled for).

One thing I will say about FFXIV, I love the Job system and how you can change your playstyle on the fly. I started out as an Arcanist (Because Summoners are fun), but quickly grew to absolutely hate it. Moved over to Marauder and never looked back despite having never tanked before in my life.

My Dragon Man, Shager Mol. I’m too tiny to even have viable Glamors yet:

Probably the biggest thing I can emphasize for new players is to treat it like a mainline Final Fantasy game. Your first time through, just play through the story quests. You don’t need to do FATEs, sidequests, or chainrun dungeons. The bulk of your XP until about level 48 or so is tied directly into the MSQ. Just do that and the blue-marked quests to unlock new things and that’s really about it.

Sidequests, FATEs, and other stuff are really meant to level alt jobs and whatnot or just to change of pace for a little bit. It can get frustrating having everything tied to the MSQ and not being able to just jump right into end-game stuff, but that is really not the intent of the devs. Go into it thinking “I’m playing a FF game” first and everything else will kind of fall into place.

The good thing is that you can still play with your buddies because there are tons of incentives for veteran players to run older content. Also, we love sprouts.

e: this isn’t necessarily at Vann since I know you were having issues with the running around, which is a bit different, but like in general to new players reading

No no, it’s fine and it’s a good remark for people thinking of jumping in.

Ironically, coming back to WoW for a bit has convinced me to go back to FFXIV again and do like you say, just focus on the MSQ for a bit.

Definitely my favorite rendition of the Endwalker teaser theme.

Another tip for people jumping in, DO NOT turn that in game music off or lower it at all. This is a written threat.

It’s one of the few games where I won’t lower the music volume at all.

I was warned that I’d become conditioned to burst into tears anytime some version of “Answers” starts playing and boy howdy that was not wrong

I kind of hope the Distant Worlds tour starts back up after all this is over. Seems like the last round they did, FFXIV was still this kind of weird underdog. Now the ShB has come out, people actually know and love stuff like “Answers” and “Dragonsong.” I can see crowds actually being excited to hear them live now.

Another thing that got me really excited was discovering that the Magitek Armor’s theme comes right out of FFVI… which I have… and have never played. SO
