The secret to tanking is the slow understanding that tanking is actually the most chill job. Not even as a joke but, like, objectively, there’s just so much less you have to deal with. At high end, especially, tanks really don’t have to worry about a ton of the mechanics that get thrown at DPS all the time.
You’ll have bad groups sometimes. It happens and FFXIV isn’t immune to it. But, if you like the mechanics of WAR, I’d say keep going with it.
That said, keep in mind you’ll unlock new jobs with each expansion that can pretty much start off immediately with only a little catch-up to MSQ. If you have tank anxiety, you have stuff like SAM and MCH waiting for you in the future.
I’ve tried, but the super super linear nature of the game and initially REALLY SLOW MSQ slog kills this game for me every time. I just can’t do it. It’s one of the most boring leveling experiences I’ve ever had in an MMO
Being able to level multiple jobs does provide you with an outlet to see how other classes fare, so I’d say, at the least, try leveling a tank, healer, and DPS, but if nothing else a tank or healer and a DPS.
I’m not 100% on the parameters for invites but there’s at least one linkshell we’ve got some folk in so if anyone catches Streaking Bird online you can send me a tell and I should be able to invite.
This probably won’t happen. Play what feels most comfortable for you and don’t worry about stalling out–I’ve been DPS from day one and it’s never caused any difficulty getting into MSQ duties or just about anything else.
In WoW, a staff is just a piece of wood eternally strapped to your back. I don’t understand why Blizzard doesn’t just give players an option to hide it.
Also, something to keep in mind is that you can report people if they’re being caustic.
I know a lot of people come into FFXIV from WoW with the mindset of “well they were just harassing me idk if that’s reportable” and I’m here to tell you that it is. It is reportable. If someone is being a jerk to you and actively making your experience miserable, that is, in fact, an actionable offense in FFXIV!
And if they used slurs they’re absolutely going to be going away for awhile. Unlike in WoW where screaming the f-slur might, at most, result in a 10 minute suspension.
That’d be why I level and story skip, tbh. These days, you can go back and experience the story through the newgame+ system through which you can replay the MSQ and class quests, so there’s no point in being hideously averse to skipping.
Palace of the dead and Heaven on High would get you caught up on how to play any class you’re jumping in with at 70 without you having to stress too much. The biggest part of playing the class is just setting the bars up right.
You wanna try a caster class? Play Ninja. Sounds crazy I know but using Mudra (Ninja hand-signs) to cast Ninjutsu (spells) feels more… magical… than any other “mage” class I have played.
Lemme explain. Most caster classes have a one button spell casts, right? You click one button to start your castbar filling till one spell fires off.
As a Ninja you can combine 3 different hand signs to queue up the desired spell, then activate said spell with another ability. So basically 1, 2, 3 button combo and then 4th button activates the spell.
This feels much more “castery” then just hitting one button and waiting for the bar to fill. It’s quite novel, especially if you flub your combo and fizzle your spell cast. It just happens to be attached to a mostly melee class.
One of the things that feels pretty contentious about FF14 is how very word of mouth the game’s information can be sometimes.
In actual English, the game doesn’t really tell you directly what a lot of the side activities and objectives you can do in the world. Chances are, your best bet is a Blue Checkmark quest (a system that used to not be a thing for a lot of quests!) but are otherwise unremarkable. Not only that, but there are emotes and glamour items and a bunch of other goodies locked behind log quest chains that don’t necessarily lead anywhere.
I think it’s pretty neat that most information is spread through player database and others, but it definitely harkens to a more Classic WoW vibe which can be Very Frustrating for new players to get into without friends/looking stuff up in advance on the good ol’ interwebz.
So, just out of curiosity, how many of you experienced your first FanFest with this? What did you think about it? About the news, the production quality, etc.
I’ve been watching like a million reaction videos, and it’s really fun to see peoples’ thoughts on their first one!
