The World of Warcraft Magic Is Gone

When I first started playing wow at the age of 12 I think the only concept of magic I had in the game, was that a game master could and there were stories of instances were, port and cause all sorts of chaos and joy on a whim.

Not that that would be the origin of fun, but the fact it no longer seems to have a place in the world, says something about the community, says something that instead of a hired employee balancing the scales, they just ban people because they received enough tickets.

For real.

For me, WoW is the most magical it has ever been. This is the longest streak I’ve stayed subbed to WoW since I started playing back at launch.

I feel sad for those who are unhappy - I wish I could share my enjoyment with others.

After reading through the replies to my post I find it interesting that some people automatically place the blame for my and other peoples disenchantment with Wow at this time completely on me and those like me.

Totally disregarding the possibility that perhaps there is a problem with the game itself. I do acknowledge that anything anyone does repeatedly for a very long time will become at times tedious and boring. Taking a break from what ever that is can be the remedy.

But on the other hand some people tend to try to disqualify the assertion that those guiding the path of Wow might be taking the game down the wrong path.

Prove it they clamor. Provide statistical empirical data! Otherwise your claims are unfounded subjective drivel. And of course it is followed with; Grow up. Stop looking at the past through rose colored glasses of nostalgia. There is nothing wrong with the game, the problem is you!

Well. It’s hard to provide statistical evidence for a feeling you might have. At a moment in time. When you get the sense that something has changed in the game environment that’s hard to pinpoint. That might be problematic.

Best example I can give to what I sense in Wow is from the movie The Matrix. The scene where Neo sees a cat in the hallway double skip. He mentions it and is told that “They have made a change in the program!”

For those of you unfamiliar with the scene, here is a video clip of the scene:

So Yeah. Could it be just my imagination. Or are the corporate suits pulling strings behind the scenes? Or perhaps its someone on the dev team operating on some secret agenda to derail the game? Or are some devs making confused decisions. Or is it nothing of the kind. Nothing at all. I don’t know? I hope it is just me. But…but…? That cat!?

While some here disagree with you, I sort of feel the same way. I remember being entranced by the original starting zones background music and atmosphere, especially Teldrassil and Dun Morogh. Even way back then, once you left your starting zone, regardless of your race, things just sort of lost their identity and began bleeding together.

My first time leveling to 60 was a long, tedious experience, but there was always something new to learn along the way. Seeing Duskwood for the first time, back when in-game nights were DARK and people carried lanterns in their off hand slot to see better, was amazing. Braving the Plaguelands for the first time was scary as hell. But after so many years and expansions, there isn’t much that impresses me anymore.

Of course, I still like the game, and play every expansion, but it isn’t the same.

I wonder how much of this is a result of the fact that Afrisabi tried to burn it all down on the way out as best we can tell. Believe it or not Danuser isn’t directly responsible for this. I’m not a fan of his work either. But I’m not going to blame the guy for fighting a fire his predecessor set with intention and gas.

That said there have been extremely bad design decisions from a systems perspective that have ruined quite a bit of the magic of the game for me, fortunately the malicious designer seems to have left. Hopefully their replacement doesn’t continue their philosophies. I think the other thing was actually playing other games and seeing there was other possibly better ways of doing things. The WoW devs still make too much work for themselves but that’s a topic for another thread.

DF might be what you need.
I didnt like the last two expansions after running the questlines…so far DF does a great job of recapturing the old world charm.
The raiders who want to blow thru questing just to get to end game probably wont notice any real difference though.

If they have limited time and cant play to catch up with gear/achievements, they should not resort to buying the game with gold from real money… they should just stop playing this videogame. Who are they fooling? When they bought it on this patch, what will they do on the next patch, on every patch, on every expansion? They are using their money to play the game. This is a game. Players should play the game. They should not use money to play the game for them. If these players persist, go ahead, waste their money. Dont ever complain with the game. It’s their choice to waste their money.

BTW, I have limited play time… very limited. If I cant cope with WoW, I would just leave. But I can catch up. I got KSM last season and just got KSM yesterday. I played the game. I enjoyed it. I know doing Mythic+ dungeons is somewhat a grind. But I dont feel it as a grind. I am having fun everytime I am on dungeons. Whereas, Solo players who dont do dungeons, I dont believe they are having a blast on just questing… delivery boy quests grinds, pick stuff here, send it over there. That’s so boring. Keep playing the game not participating on Season 4 activities are extremely boring. More power to them, sustaining their subscription without playing WoW’s core. To me, a player who doesnt play WoW’s core is a player on a wrong game. I know you play WoW’s old content. Soon, you would consume this content and you would run out of things to do. It would be fast. That’s when you would say that World of WarCraft magic is gone.

This is how I feel about Halo now

Yes and no, if i remember well, Afrisabi was fired few month after the launch of Bfa no?
I can imagine that Danuser couldn’t do anything for BfA but it also means that he had free hands on Shadowland that could have been initiated by Afrisabi and what has he done?

Completely disregarding anything related to death prior to Shadowland, including Legion (remember the souls of Uther, Ner’zhul and Arthas?). Just this fact alone is enough to call Shadowland a fan fiction.

To erase Garrosh and Arthas from the Warcraft universe, literaly.

Protecting Sylvanas at all cost and by doing so, he managed to ruin the character by telling us that she was a fake all along until she got back her missing shard of her soul.

To ruin the warcraft universe with the Jailer being behind every major event (while not being developped properly), and it include ruining Warcraft III.

I also remember the open insults in the Grimoire of Shadowland: Jabs against the taurens, chaman, the Chronicle book or/and their authors and finally had no shame to tell us at the end of the book that they scammed us on the funeral rites part.

And now i feared to see what they have in store for Dragonflight thanks to what they have done duing Shadowland.

I want to feel some magic through the stories, to enjoy the discovery and exploration.
But if the main one is done wrong again, it will be hard to appreciate it.

The magic didn’t die, Blizzard murdered it.

I mean you can only play a game so much before the appeal of it is gone right? Nobody in their right mind wants to go replay Bloodborne again that’d just be dumb.

No, Danuser was locked until the mid slands story AFAIK. So we were always stuck with what we got. How much of that was Afrisabi and how much was Danuser trying to do his best who knows. But a lot of it has long lead times, things like animations even boss fights don’t come out of thin air. SoD was being worked on well before Afrisabi was fired. But likely SoTFO was just in ideation.

So yeah is it fan fiction level? Yes, but how much of that was Afrisabi and how much is Danuser I don’t know. The anecdotes that have come out are that Afrisabi forced the story over the objections of the entire writing team. I really do think it was an attempt to sabotage his employer on the way out.

I mean, Dragonflight is shaping up to actually be pretty good if the alpha and beta are any indication.

Well now. That’s some analogy. But ok.

Since you have mentioned Peter Pan. I would like to bring up the animated film. The star of which in my opinion was Tinker Bell. Think she was either a fairy or a pixie? But as diminutive as she was she captured my imagination. Oh ok Peter Pan was the movies Star.
But Tinker Bell came in a close second.

Some people have said that they think the reason the magic of Wow is gone for me is because I’ve gotten old. Yes I have gotten old, but think of this; I remember watching the original Peter Pan Animated movie when I was a young kid during the late 1950s. I thought the film was magical at the time.

Now in 2022 I watched the film again. I still felt the Magic of the film. My point is that it is not age.

I also noticed now, that Peter Pan had Elf ears. So he was an Elf then? Or a Fairy or was he a Pixie? I have always thought that he was a human kid that never grew up?

And as far as Never Never Land… Here we are folks. Welcome to Wow.

Not to sing my own praises too much, but I thought it was very apt.

The film I am referencing is the Robin Williams one in which Peter Pan has left Neverland and is grown up with a family. Through a series of events, he is forced to return to Neverland to face his old nemesis and save his children, but before he can do so, he has to learn how to be Peter Pan again, including how to fly.

What he learns is that everyone has something uniquely special to themselves that gives them that magic and even he is eventually able to do so but it’s different than before because he has changed over the years.

So yes, being older in and of itself doesn’t prevent things from being magical but your perception of things does change over time. The power has been within you this whole time, you have to find your own happiness, someone else can’t do it for you. If you are unable to, maybe it’s time to move on.

I understand your opinion and agree to a degree. But there is an active conundrum in effect in this situation.

World of Warcraft is the top of the line in mmorpgs. There are no other mmorpgs that even come close. So in effect a person can leave Wow seeking to find a better game but there are none out there. Wow is it. So where do we go from here?

Trading Wow for another game would be like me driving a Lamborghini for years and then having to trade it in for a Toyota Camry. No, just no!

Another factor is we the players pay for Bliz’s service. Even though the staff at Bliz has had big problems changes in management and production staff. Internal strife etc. I would assume that we should continue to receive a quality product. There are many free mmorpgs in the marketplace but we like Wow the best and we pay for it.

I have always been happy playing Wow. You mention that I have to find my own happiness. Sure thing. But there are external factors at play here. Like Staff at Bliz control what happens in Wow. I have no control as to what new paths the devs decide to take the game. Few options left. Either continue playing Wow. Stop playing Wow. Or play Wow the board game lol.

I do play other games. At present I play Phantasy Star Online 2. Star Wars the Old Republic. Playstation rpgs. Been thinking on trying the Final Fantasy mmorpg. Etc. But I want to continue playing Wow since that is my best choice. Pity the Devs seem to be directing the game into the Twilight Zone.
