While they’re definitely a big part of the reason I feel this way, I’m not going to mention leveling content. Everyone knows that’s a mess, with you jumping from place to place, back and forth in time - and if you’re Horde, even changing warchiefs a few times. Everybody knows how messy that is.
But what I have to wonder is why in even current expansion zones, the actual world we’re fighting and questing in feels so … pointless?
It almost seems as if the entire questing experience is completely devoid from the main story and the raids that come with it, save for a few exceptions. Most dungeons just kind of exist for the sake of having a dungeon, and the questing experience does a very poor job of setting the player up to enter the raids.
This is in contrast to say Wrath of the Lich King - not my favorite expansion ever, honestly, but the way the content all tied together was fantastic. You really felt like you were building up to Icecrown, and even places like Ulduar had some preamble. Everything you did in the world felt like it was building to something greater, and that’s something I feel is desperately missing in BFA.
tl;dr: Questing content feels entirely divorced from raid/dungeon content (dungeons to a lesser extent I’ll admit), and I’m a big dumb mad nerd who feels like posting about it.

Having the LK pop up every where in the world is what made that story line great, back when imo.
In terms of main quest lines for each zone (I skip everything else on alts), I find that dungeons tie in very well myself. There great at wrapping up the main story line most times (dont get me started on Jaina being put inside a mythic dungeon on release)

I feel that dungeons tie in very well with their questing content and often times the raids do too (Except Uldir as Alliance, lets go on an adventure with Magni friends!). I’ll agree things can be kinda chaotic with all the time periods that are covered in questing content though. There is a ton of story there and often times you just fly through and barely get a shot of the general picture at all. While I’m not a fan of removing old content, I kind of feel like bfa should have gotten the Cata level treatment with remaking the old world, to really push the narrative that the world is at war. Maybe layer it on top of each zone as a phase so players have the choice of doing older content. Plus, with how much time has passed since some older expansions, it would be neat to see how areas of the world have changed to reflect past actions.
I have to agree. A lot of the zone questing has nothing to do w/ the overall story of the expansion they are in.
In the case of BFA though this is a plus. The overall story is lacking but the zone stories are well done.

Yeah, I’m sort of rethinking what I said about the dungeons in that respect. They do tie together the zone stories well enough, but I still feel like they could have done a lot more than just have them end after each zone’s dungeon. Oh well.
Don’t get me wrong though, BFA has probably had some of my favorite zones ever, at least in a vacuum. Maybe I’m totally wrong and WoW should just focus on smaller stories going forward, 'cause the main plot’s always been a bit silly.
I agree with this as well. I remember in vanilla and even bc to some extent this was the case.
Not sure where or why they got away from this.
