The World Can't Agree On Trolls

Without going into too much detail, I’ve been studying lots and lots of fantasy elements lately, and I’ve noticed something interesting.

There’s a certain amount of consensus on what most standard fantasy creatures are.

Elves look like pretty people with pointy ears, they like beauty and they live a lot. Sometimes they are immortal, sometimes they are just long lived, sometimes their ears are basically human-like just a little bit pointy, sometimes they are dagger-shaped. But that core of “pretty, pointy and long-lived” is omnipresent.

Orcs are savage, war-like and humanity hates them. Sometimes they are super evil, sometimes they are noble but misunderstood, sometimes they are gray, sometimes they are green. Sometimes they are large and stronk, sometimes they are basically Goblins. But the core remains.

Dwarves are stronk, short, drunk and hairy, with a taste for mining and metal-working.

Et cetera.

But Trolls…

There’s no consensus on Trolls.

Sometimes they are dumb, sometimes they are human-smart, Sometimes they are hairy, sometimes they are bald, sometimes they are good, sometimes they are evil, sometimes they are super ugly, sometimes they are cute, sometimes they turn into stone, sometimes they have nothing to do with stone, sometimes they heal fast, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they are particularly weak against fire, sometimes they just burn like anybody else, etc.

Compare the WoW Troll to any other Troll in fantasy. Each setting’s Troll is essentially it’s own creature sharing a name.

I just find that very interesting and I wanted to share

I think what you’re getting at is that Trolls are just like people. I.e. people are trolls.

I think you may have won the internet for the morning, lad. Because you’re entirely correct!

I just lump WoW trolls in with elves. Mostly due to them not just being the origin race of the elves, but they fit very nicely into the Tolkien elf blueprint.

Ancient race that dominated the world. Masters of magic and schools unknown to the races of men. Were once a power house but are in severe decline. Etc etc

WoW Trolls are basically Elves without all the pretty stuff.

But on other settings Trolls may be closer to Goblins, or Ogres, or anything else, really.

Like, the Trolls from Marvel Comics are basically hairy ogres that turn into stone when exposed to sunlight. They heal fast but they are vulnerable to iron (which kind of invalidates their healing factor since most weapons are made of iron lol)

Don’t forget the troll dolls. They’re fans of nudity and rock 'n roll.

And I have noticed that you are fun and should make gnomes!

And I think that trolls are smelly. Which can be fun!

Sounds like the makings of a pretty good party.

Unless you are playing Valheim…and then then they are mostly none of those things.

Well, obviously sometimes people don’t want to follow the conventions.

I could make a cutesy little peaceful creature resembling a cat and call it an Orc.

But the existence of points outside the curve doesn’t invalidate the existence of a tendency. Fantasy Dwarves, from Snow White to Marvel to Tolkien to WoW, will mostly share the “core fantasy dwarf characteristics”.

The “issue” here (it isn’t really an issue lol) is that there are no “core fantasy troll characteristics”.

Hi - yeah, I know what you mean. Many years studying formally comparative mythology- but mainly a book (that every wannabe author) I’m writing I’ve spent 7 serious years at this research…anyway,

The closest I get is part of the fairy realm. Fae are and aren’t exactly what’s depicted in SL. Trolls are the weird ones in the lore, though they definitely aren’t WoW’s version.

Most definitions I found referenced author fictional representations. One does have a definition that relates them to Norse mythology. Quoting: “Trull” which is synonymous with GIANT in old Norse mythology, though later they are described as DWARF-like. Trolls live alone or in small family groups in remote rocky regions, or in their realm of Utgard."

There’s a few more paragraphs - they seem to be interchangeably mixed. One part even says they can shapeshift, born without eyes and have to steal them from children. Possess treasures, sometimes called BJERGFOLK.

Weird race.

This book is only about 20 years old unlike others so you should be able to get your hands on it. “The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Fairies,” by Anna Franklin

Her bibliography will send you down another magical path.

Welp, even if they don’t all smoke weed their creators clearly did. (Or bath salts.)
